[...] Well I’ve been waiting on the totals all weekend, but it is now official: last week was the biggest week in webcomics EVER. There were not one, but TWO huge announcements that came out of the annual San Diego Comic-Con. First, at the Eisner Award ceremony, Scott Kurtz was presented with the Best Digital Comic award. Not to be outdone, D.J. Coffman was announced as the winner of the Comic Book Challenge, with his property, “Hero By Night”Â?, being optioned for production in both print and television. Suddenly, we’ve got two mega-super-giganta-celebrities on our hands. Can anything top such a huge, blockbuster week? Funny you should say that. [...]

[...] I’m a bit surprised that there hasn’t been more discussion about the Eisner Award winners around the ‘Sphereiverse. Link courtesy of the Beat, which has been on a small hiatus of sorts over the last couple of days. Just my luck. Chuffed, as out U.K. friends say, to see Ramona Fradon and elected to the Hall of Fame. ‘Bout time. Jim Steranko, too- can’t believe he’s not already in! Now how about Jerry Grandenetti next year? [...]

PVP was very deserving of the award this year. I'm glad to see Scott's great work finally recognized. He's a great guy with a great heart as was evidenced by his acceptance speech.

It is a shame Frank Espinosa left empty handed. Rocketo is amazing.

Zeus winning the retailer award was icing on the cake. Richard Neal is a great guy who really cares about comics and promoting them, CAPE is proof enough of that. His store and staff are wonderful as well.

Calvin has worked behind the scenes in the publishing industry for the lat 20 years to get comics and grpahic novels recognized as legitimate literature. He instituted regular comics and graphic novel reviewsin Publisher's Weekly, is the co-editor of PW's Comics Weekly, has moderated/put together graphic novel programs at Book Expo and other mainstream publishing events--in short he has done more than any single person outside the comics industry to legitimizze comics in the mainstream publishing world.

The Clampett Award is given for both charity and mentoring work, so it was quite fitting for him to receive it this year.

What has Calvin Reid done to win a Humanitarian Award? (just wondering)

Kurtz proves that if one is successful enough, one can be a massive jerk and still win highly political awards (that, plus not much competition).

Why would anyone be happy just because a woman won an award? Gender seems a bizarre criteria for such things.

I am STOKED Zeus won Spirit of Retailing. It is a FANTASTIC store, with an amazing staff. Richard Neal has created a sense of community, which is why I love his place! (And CAPE! is pretty damn good, too!)
