[...] This has been going around the comic webs the last few days, and I, with head securely up my ass, just saw it today: From Heidi’s Beat: “Early this morning, the Texas home of award-winning writer/artist Lea Hernandez, my friend and co-creator of the graphic novel Killer Princesses, caught fire and burned. Half her house is now gone, and the rest is smoke-damaged. In addition, she lost at least six of her family’s beloved pets, two dogs and four cats. If you knew Lea, you’d know how devastating that is.” [...]

"If you’re a retailer, I ask that you set up a donations jar."

we have done this at Green Brain as well as donating all money from the sale of any of Lea's books.

Lea, our thoughts and well wishes go out to you and your family!
bigs hugs from Dan and Katie

[...] First and foremost: My deepest condolences and best wishes to cartoonist Lea Hernandez, whose house caught fire sometime Tuesday night. Her family escaped without injury, but a full brace of pets were lost to the catastrophe, as well as uncounted art and personal posessions. At least half the house reportedly burned in the fire, with smoke damage marring much of the rest. Efforts to help her financially are already underway; to help out, send a donation to her directly at her Paypal account, divalea@gmail.com. You can keep up with Hernandez’ efforts to rebuild her family’s lives at her LiveJournal blog. [...]

Hey, if you guys want to buy some consumer electronics for the daughter of someone who has brought you pleasure then be my guest. I really wasn't trying to be a twat about it, it's your money and if you choose to help out someone in need with your $$$ then more power to you. Really.

Just saying that struck a bum note with me. There's worse things in the world than going without a portable games system for a few months.

Best of luck to the Hernandez family, really. I'll go give a few bucks now just to make myself feel like less of an arsehole. I'll be sending Girl's nDS share to a cause I think is worthier though.

I've had the great fortune of knowing Lea's family and she is a dear friend of mine. It breaks my heart to hear about her children losing their pets, their clothes and, yes, one Nintendo DS.

Not to be an ass or anything, but I think I'll help cheer her up with a donation rather than starving kids in Africa.

We've gone ahead and posted a banner on our site to encourage visitors to help out as well. I've had the privilege of becoming close friends with Lea and I hope this awful news can turn around into something hopeful.
