§ Someone has been pooping in Lea Hernandez’ yard! Was it:

• David, the guy who charged the builder for $400. more than the agreed-on $600. for two tub surrounds.

• Juan, the guy who was touching up the walls around the trim with a 3″ wide brush. He’d touch up the walls, and slop gray paint onto the trim.

• The Guy With No Name, who just cleans up after David.

§ Ted Naifeh returns to his LJ and announces the return of COURTNEY CRUMRIN:

First of all, I’m going to appear at the New York Comic-Con on the 24th and 25th of February. Sorry for the short notice. If any of you folks are going to be at the convention, please come by and say hello. I’ll be making an official announcement there, but here’s the unofficial pre-announcement.

This year will bring (drumroll, please) a NEW COURTNEY CRUMRIN BOOK! Yes, it’s true, the next chapter in the grand Courtney saga will come out starting in August. This time, it’s going to come out a little different. Instead of four individual chapters, the forthcoming installment will appear in two perfect-bound 48 page editions; before being bound together into a single digest at the end of the year.

The final collection will be the same charming mini-format as the first three, while the two issues will look more like the Portrait of the Warlock one-shot. The format change has not been decided for sure, but this is what we’re leaning toward. Also, while the schedule hasn’t been set in stone yet, you can rely on the first issue making it in time for Comic-con International in San Diego. More info on this will appear here as it develops.

§ Dan Vado wonders if that Disney license was worth it.:

Yes, the learning curve has been pretty high. The way I see it, by the time we get this thing under control our license will expire (that, by the way, is August 2008, which in comic book time is a lot closer than you think). I allowed us to fall into one of those traps where every single thing needed to work out 100% correctly for things to run smoothly. I often caution people against making plans based on everything falling into place, so that was my bad. The worst thing to happen was that the initial sales for all of the titles were well under our expectations, which were pretty conservative to begin with. That started a spiral that we have not righted ourselves from.

I think we were also not ready to deviate so dramatically from our core business model of publishing creator-owned titles and I over-taxed our resources.

The Disney thing (as I call it) has not been what one might call a success for us. While the comics have sold better than the rest of our line (for the most part) the sales have not justified the amount of time, money and effort that has gone into these projects. ON top of that, I made some bad contractual decisions that are coming back to haunt me. Lesson learned, just as you should never get into a land war in Asia, you should also never make a deal with Disney that involves creating original content with their properties.
If you have ever wondered, as I once did, why there were not more comics based on Disney’s vast array of properties, well that’s why.

Dan has learned the hard way that the LCS system will not support the world’s most popular brand. Oh well. [Link via Johanna.]
§ Steve Bisette investigates the history of Rick Veitch’s collection of EPIC-era comics, SHINY BEASTS, with a look at the editors of the era and more:

Still, that gig was landed in part due to Heavy Metal art director John Workman’s shot at “Monkey See,” the story you’ll see in its totality in Shiny Beasts; John dug what Rick and I had done with that piece, even if it ended up at Epic, and we were shoed-in-to 1941: The Illustrated Story after John’s first choice, Alex Toth, declined the project despite John’s best efforts.

Thus, the burnout of Creative Burnouts via 1941: The Illustrated Story led directly into Rick’s most fertile creative relationship of the 1980s: his work with editor Archie Goodwin. Archie was already a legend to our generation via his work as a writer in comics, credited (his scripts and editing chops defined the entire Jim Warren horror comics line via the debut issues of Creepy and Eerie, etc.) and uncredited (Secret Agent x-9 scripting for Al Williamson, His Name is Savage script for Gil Kane, etc.), and Rick couldn’t have conjured a better editor or mentor in the wake of Rick’s tenure working with/under Joe Kubert.

Archie news: WAR!!!

02/14/07

CivilchoreYou can’t say those cats at Archie aren’t with-it. They have seen the way this thing is going, and they know they need a universe spanning saga that will make all their fans buy every book in the line:

From the pages of Marvel Comic’s Civil War to DC’s World War III, the comics community has been facing strife and conflict, turning brothers against each other, and friends against friends. The fever pitch of war has hit Riverdale High as Archie and Jughead turn against each other in “CIVIL CHORE!” Archie Comics takes its look at the divisions that shake the foundation for the comics community and we ask our loyal readers…

WHOSE SIDE ARE YOU ON!

The rest of the press release rather clumsily recounts THE ENTIRE FRIGGIN’ PLOT OF THE COMIC, so we’ll just say that Archie’s request for a raise in his allowance leads to a division that threatens to tear Riverdale apart forever!!! Jughead, Betty and even Veronica all get involved and chaos ensues!

Okay, now do you see that is how it is done?

Moviemakers turn to comics with SALVADOR

02/14/07

Sal Cover 01BOOM! Studios is publishing SALVADOR, a comic from The Polish Brothers, the award-winning writer-director-producer team behind the upcoming film, THE ASTRONAUT FARMER. Hollywood types turning to comics? That never happens. But the art looks nice. The creative team includes writer Sebastian A Jones, J.K. Woodward (FALLEN ANGEL) on covers and Steph Stamb (ANGEL) on the interiors, known for his work on IDW’s Angel series.

“A savior for DNA discards. He is the salvation for genetic engineering gone awry. As a product of testing, he was born brittle and light as a feather. As a result, he can fly, but is ultimately fragile. The world he loves and desires to save – can shatter him to pieces.” The saga of SALVADOR begins in April 2007. The first issue features 22 pages of story content in full color.

“The Polish Brothers began their careers at the forefront of American independent film in 1999 and have never looked back since,” BOOM! Publisher Ross Richie said. “Their debut film TWIN FALLS IDAHO was the toast of Sundance in 1999, and they’ve followed it up with a string of brilliant films in JACKPOT, NORTHFORK, and the upcoming ASTRONAUT FARMER. We just couldn’t be more excited that they’ve chosen BOOM! As a home to one of their projects. It’s a delight to be a fan of someone in film and get a shot now at working with them in comics.”

NYCC: Cheerleader girl from HEROES to appear

02/14/07

Hayden Panettiere 5

Hayden Panettiere will be appearing at New York Comic Con on behalf of Entertainment Legends where she will be available for autographing and will “pose” for a limited number of photos with fans on both Saturday 2/24 and Sunday 2/25. The “posed” limited photo opportunity will require a $10 donation to a charity yet to be named by Ms. Panettiere. A rising film and TV star, Hayden is currently starring in the NBC television drama Heroes, where she has been cast in the unique and challenging role of a high school cheerleader who is literally indestructible. The new NBC series is a critical and audience hit. NYCC convention officials note that Ms. Panettiere’s participation in their event adds still more entertainment value and celebrity appeal to a convention that is already brimming with star-studded appearances.

“The fact that Hayden Panettiere will make herself accessible to our fans is terrific,” notes Greg Topalian, Event Director for New York Comic Con. “The whole point of New York Comic Con is not just to give fans a chance to hear celebrities talk or give a speech, but to give them an opportunity to actually meet some of their favorite personalities in person, shake their hand, or get their autograph. In this case, a few lucky fans will even get their picture taken!”

The photo sessions will take place at the end of the day on Saturday, 2/24 and Sunday 2/25. Ms. Panettiere’s autographing schedule, as well as exact time and location for the photo sessions will be posted on the NYCC website in the next few days.

What the–A new comics company?

02/14/07

Red5LogoVeterans of Lucasfilms and online fan sites form their own company “RED 5 COMICS.” Okay, we get it. we’re standing by!

The creators of some of the internet’s most popular entertainment websites announced today they are launching a new comic publishing company that will introduce its first titles this fall.

Red 5 Comics is the creation of Paul Ens, former director of Lucasfilm’s StarWars.com and Lucas Online, and Scott Chitwood, co-founder of TheForce.net and contributor to ComingSoon.net and SuperheroHype.com.

True to the passions of its founders, Red 5 Comics will produce cinematic-style stories that appeal to the same avid movie and comic fans who already frequent their websites. The Red 5 line-up will be a combination of creator-owned and internally developed titles. Individual comic issues will be sold in both traditional print form at comic shops and in downloadable electronic formats online.

“Over the years, we’ve had the great pleasure to cross paths, both online and in-person, with many talented and creative people,” said Ens, “from artists, to writers, to filmmakers and actors, and countless enthusiastic fans. Not only have they been a great inspiration, but we plan to include many of them in Red 5 as well.”

Among the titles currently in development are…

BCI Eclipse is releasing The Ghost Busters on DVD for the first time! This is not the Bill Murray/Harold Ramis version — it’s the Forrest Tucker/Larry Storch version. Were any words ever a clearer clarion call to comedy? And you know, we really loved that show when we were kids. As the press release notes, not only did it co-star a giant orilla (played by Bob Burns) but people like Ted Knight, Jim Backus and Billy Barty often made appearances. In fatc, all things considered, it might even have been better than Dusty’s Trail.

“This long lost gem has finally made its way to DVD” said Jeff Hayne, Director of Acquisitions, BCI. “And as one of the champions of nostalgic TV, BCI is thrilled to be releasing this classic series that spawned an animated series and inspired the title of one of the top feature films of the 1980’s.”

When trouble calls, The Ghost Busters answer! From their run-down office, Spenser, Tracy, and Kong take on assignments no mere mortal could face. Good thing that Spenser and Kong have the super-smart gorilla Tracy on their team! In the super-secret missions assigned to them by the mysterious “Zero,” the trio of bumbling detectives confronts phantoms, vampires, werewolves, the Frankenstein monster, mobsters, Vikings, magicians, and even a devilish dummy!

The set includes a bunch of behind the scenes features, interviews, galleries and so on, all produced by Andy Mangels, so there’s your comics tie-in there, bub.

Happy Valentine’s day, y’all! Thanks to an influx of nasal steroids, antibiotics and green tea we’re finally on the mend. Really, coach, we’re ready to go back in. Honest!

For some reason we got a shitload of press releases yesterday while we were out at Toy Fair. So we’re going to skip the link blogging and just roll with the NEWS. Fair. Balanced. Hard-hitting. The way you like it. So much is going on, and we know you don’t want to miss one minute of the fun.

We also have a ton of photos from Toy Fair, including Neca, Sideshow and the kind of things only The Beat would be interesting in. Believe me, some of it is good! But we’re going to have to post it on Thursday because THERE IS JUST TOO MUCH GOING ON HERE TODAY! IT’S OUTTA CONTROL!

Judge: Ellison suit can proceed

02/13/07

Several people emailed us this from Harlan Ellison’s forum:

BIG WIN TODAY!

For those of you following my lawsuit against Gary Groth and Fantagraphics, you may relay this to Groth’s websites and/or all the other comic news websites:

The Fantagraphics attorneys, a large and prestigious firm as steely and merciless as Latham & Watkins — the firm that defended AOL in my successful litigation against them — known for the ploy commonly referred to as “papering out the opposition” — entered a gigantic, voluminous, very expensive Motion to Dismiss in Federal District Court, attempting to have my complaint dismissed at the git-go, before it could proceed to discovery stage and thence to trial.

We went to court today. The court could either kick my ass into the street and I would be in the path of Groth’s attorneys seeking costs…in the hundreds of thousands of dollars…which I don’t have…or…

WE WON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The case proceeds. After more than 30 years of putting up with Groth and Kim Thompson and Fantagraphics’ calumny…

We proceed toward balance in the universe. Thank you thank you Charlie Petit and John Carmichael, Knights of Jurisprudence!

Spread the word. But be polite.

David P. Welsh at The Comics Reporter has links to the motion to dismiss and Ellison’s response.

The defendants had attempted to get the suit dismissed on the ground of California’s anti-SLAPP legislation. A SLAPP, or “Strategic Lawsuit Against Public Participation” is a lawsuit which attempts to silence critics. Groth and Thompson’s legal team claimed that the Ellison defamation suit constituted an attempt to silence them via the threat of the cost of a lawsuit.

Or something like that. What is now clear is the differing PR tactics of the Groth/Thompson and Ellison camps. FBI releases piles and piles of legal documents which we keep swearing we will go through one of these days. Ellison sends out big war whoops which a kindergartner could understand.

Study: nerds are cool

02/13/07

Yet another breathless newspaper report which reveals that people who are smarter than you have been doing a lot of stuff behind the scenes all along.

Trendspotters are recognizing a type of nouveau nerd: They are proud of their intellectual prowess, and popular culture is beginning to appreciate the brains-and-sensitivity power combination. Call it the revenge of nerds … cool nerds.

“The geeks are having their moment in the sun with technology being the name of the game in our society,” said David Morrison, with Twentysomething Inc., a Pennsylvania-based young-adult research firm. “Geekhood is going to be cool for a long time to come.”

Historically, geeks have been portrayed as social pariahs who just didn’t fit in, Morrison said. But Microsoft chairman — and billionaire — Bill Gates has made nerdiness cool for today’s young adults. And nerd status gained momentum with the pop-culture craze that surrounded socially awkward Napoleon Dynamite.

“Geekhood is now a gateway to immense wealth, power and fame that’s beyond our wildest imagination,” Morrison said.

NYCC: Vertical

02/13/07

Vertical’s inimitable Anne Ishii posts their New York Comic-con plans in the form of a sort of Socratic dialog:

Anne: We’ve been busy.
Dirty Sanchez: Busy doing what?
Anne: Busy getting ready for the NEW YORK COMIC-CON!
Dirty Sanchez: Hold on hold on. I gotta get something off my chest
here.
Comic-con, you mean like nerd fest?
Anne: Shut up, Sanchez.

Folks, this is going to be the Vertical Comic-Con exhibition of a lifetime.

First, we launch Vertical’s highly anticipated, if sexually ambiguous manga (comics):

TO TERRA… by Keiko Takemiya. “In space, no one can hear you cry.”

It has all the juicy makings of a space opera…except astronauts in adult diapers. Seriously though, To Terra… makes Star Trek look like a show for losers.

Come by booth 965 for samples and stuff.

We’re also showing off the master/professor/educator supreme of horror cinema, DAVID KALAT. Most notably the founder of America’s oldest DVD import company, All Day Entertainment, Kalat is more recently the author of our book

J-Horror: The Ultimate Guide to The Ring, The Grudge and Beyond.

KALAT will be talking about Japanese horror cinema and the peculiar video/film industry that gave rise to it, on:

Saturday Feb 24, 8-9pm. I know I know. You’re thinking, “8pm?!”

Tell you what. You come out, and we will automatically enter you to win…

THE VERTICAL HORROR COLLECTION. That’s The Ring Trilogy by Koji Suzuki, Parasite Eve (which is the basis of the PlayStation videogame of same name), The Crimson Labyrinth (which is Battle Royale meets Lost), and of course, a copy of J-Horror.

Then, Saturday night you’ll stay up all night reading those books and come back Sunday afternoon to hear Vertical talk about:

THE FUTURE OF MANGA That’s Sunday, Feb 25 from 3-4pm. A couple of Vertical charges will explain with song and dance, what it means to publish a genre of comics more ubiquitous than the personal blog.

For the dedicated who make it to our presentation, we offer the first four volumes of Buddha and Volume 1 of To Terra… as a door prize to one lucky otaku.

The NY Comic-Con also marks the launch of our new line of craft and humor books created by the intrepid D.I.Y. team Aranzi Aronzo. We launch with two books by them. The Cute Book will teach you how to be cute, and The Bad Book will teach you how to, well, be bad. Aranzi Aronzo’s crafts are a fun and innocent diversion for kids 1 to 92, featuring a panoply of characters with strange histories. Think Hello Kitty on LSD.

Dirty Sanchez: Busy doing what?
Anne: Shut up, Sanchez.

Don’t miss any of the action, kids. We’ll be there with bells on.

02/13/07

Kevin Melrose has relaunched Comics, Covered as his catch-all blog:

Like the previous version, this one will focus on comic-book cover art and design. But here I’ll also post reviews and creator interviews, and write about all-ages and young-adult fiction, contemporary fantasy and whatever else piques my interest.

If you browse through the site you’ll find archived pieces that originally appeared at Blog@Newsarama, Comic Foundry and on the previous version of this blog. And shortly, the new content will begin to appear.

But, alas, no ceramic owls.

Hello. We’re all hopped up on cold medicine and steroids now, so we take no responsibility for what is about to happen.

Let’s see how long we can do it.

We’ve got just the place for this in our post-Tokyo urban wasteland home:

Possibly the most influential graphic artist of his generation, Gary Panter is the creator of Jimbo, a post-nuclear cartoon character whose adventures were first chronicled as a comic strip in the ’70s LA hardcore-punk paper Slash and later in RAW magazine. Panter was among the artists honored in the 2006-2007 exhibition “Masters of American Comics.”

This is the first-ever officially licensed figure of Jimbo. Working directly with Gary Panter, Yoe! Studio have crafted a very detailed (in every sense even anatomically!) rendition of this iconic character.

Evanier seeks rare Kirby art

02/12/07

Can you help this man?

I’m up at an ungodly hour, concluding a lonnnnng day of working on the Jack Kirby book I announced back here. Before I hit the linens, I wanted to put out a public appeal. We’re looking for interesting and special Kirby art to include in the book. This may be the nicest reproduction of Jack’s work we’ll ever see and I’d like to feature some pieces that especially deserve that treatment. Several collectors are loaning me originals — and even unframing framed pieces so they can be scanned at a high resolution.

I’m most interested in pieces that are either historic or early. I have access to hundreds of…well, I wouldn’t say “common” since nothing Jack drew was “common.” But pages that were common for Jack from the mid-sixties onward. But I’d like to locate the original art to some early pieces and especially to things that weren’t done for Marvel, or were done for DC in the forties or fifties. I’m also trying to find intricate pencil pieces and one or two really spectacular pages from the Fourth World material. Art does not have to leave your hands if you can get it to a place that does high-rez scans, and we’ll pay for expenses incurred and give proper thanks and such.

Please drop me a line if you have something you think oughta be in this book and you’re willing to share it with the Kirby fans of the world.
