Ace cricketer hits comics as Sachin The Master Blaster

Tendulkar Sachin Test 100 Arms Raised Blk WhteForget about John Woo or Nicolas Cage: Virgin Comics is really hitting it up the crease this time with a comic based on Indian cricket hero Sachin Tendulkar:

The monthly comic magazine, which is being published by Virgin Comics, Total Multimedia Ltd in collaboration with Tendulkar, is expected to hit newsstands this year.

The superhero character will be known as ‘Sachin The Master Blaster’ for comic books, animation and games.

‘Sachin Tendulkar is well recognised as an achiever globally, and it works best to have him as the hero for our comic, gaming and animation series,’ said Suresh Seetharaman, president of Virgin Comics and Virgin Animation.

Tendulkar is considered the the second greatest Test batsman ever and hold the record for the most Test centuries, most ODI centuries and the most runs in ODI cricket and was the fastest to score 10,000 runs in test history. Although not normally a bowler, he has taken 38 wickets in 135 Tests and 146 wickets in 377 ODIs.

That concludes our “cricket moment.”

Hey, I’ve seen Shaun of the Dead, I know how awesome a Cricket Bat can be.

Also I worked at Lord’s Cricket Ground for like 2 months as a contract employee so I’m one of like 2 dozen Canadians who aren’t on the National team and understand the rules.

Blimey — a legitimate “cricket moment” on The Beat!

What next? Heidi to wish the England cricket team her very best against New Zealand in their opening match of the World Cup today?

That penultimate paragraph is complete gibberish to me. I wouldn’t even know where to begin parsing that one. Thankfully, pitcher and catchers have reported and spring training is underway!

I smell a crossover with Marvel’s NFL SuperPro character in the works…

    Augie:

it translates to “laughs at Barry Bonds and his ridiculous hat.”

Unless Barry Bonds is an actor, or a spaceman, or something.

I knew the last England ladies cricket captain a little bit, when I was a student. I’ve always thought there was a gap in the market for a women’s cricket manga.

Like baseball, I always thought of Cricket as a nice afternoon drinking beer and working on my suntan.

For the record, I’m rooting for the Black Caps.

Bear with me. I’ve only seen cricket on tv a few times. Terms for Augie:

Test = international cricket match; takes a few days (?)
century = 100 runs as a batsman before making out
ODI = one day international, which is cricket limited to 50 overs per team, so it is done in one day
over = 6 tosses to the batsman by the fielding side’s bowler
bowler = throws to the batters; sometimes the bowler switches between overs and indeed one bowler cannot do the whole game (?)
wicket = getting a batter out; taken from the name of the sticks the batsmen protect
