Marvel Month-to-Month Sales April 2007

05/31/07

by Paul O’Brien

With CIVIL WAR finally behind us, and WORLD WAR HULK not yet underway, Marvel have space for a little breather between major crossovers. But that doesn’t mean it’s a quiet month. The death of Captain America continues to rack up the sales, with the FALLEN SON tie-in issues. And new titles include AVENGERS: THE INITIATIVE, NOVA, LONERS, OMEGA FLIGHT and SPIDER-MAN/FANTASTIC FOUR. There’s also the first book from the new Marvel Illustrated imprint. And Joss Whedon takes over RUNAWAYS - what happens when you put a big name writer on a smaller comic?

The Spider-Man books are still benefitting from the “Back in Black” branding, and a huge chunk of the Marvel line is proudly displaying an “Initiative” banner. It’s not technically a crossover, but it’s helping sales anyway. ICV2 estimates that, remarkably, Civil War and Initiative titles accounted for 13% of the periodicals sold in the direct market, and 22% of the graphic novels.

As usual, Marvel were the top publisher in the direct market, beating DC by 41% to 34% in dollar share, and 38% to 34% in unit share. It’s a slightly closer month than usual, but then Marvel is missing a lot of big titles, and it doesn’t have a major crossover on at the moment. DC had the WORLD WAR III event, effectively shipping eight issues of 52. Allowing for that, Marvel still had an impressive margin over their rivals.

Thanks as always to Milton Griepp and ICV2 for permission to use their figures for these calculations.

1,3. FALLEN SON: DEATH OF CAPTAIN AMERICA
04/07 Wolverine - 157,291
04/07 Avengers - 140,782 (-10.5%)

Officially a series of one-shots, but in reality a five-issue miniseries, FALLEN SON features various characters reacting to the death of Captain America. Marvel clearly regard this as a major project in its own right, since they’ve paired Jeph Loeb with some of their biggest artists. And thus far, it’s a huge hit. The second issue drop is very modest, and the sales are enormous.

Unfortunately, CAPTAIN AMERICA itself didn’t ship in April. That might jeopardise the momentum from Cap’s death, but with the tie-in books selling like this, Marvel are unlikely to be losing much sleep over that possibility.

Nymphet update

05/31/07

Well what do you know, Seven Seas publisher Jason DeAngelis proves he is a responsible, mature adult by speaking publicly and frankly on a controversy involving his company. This man can never run for public office! In the above post on the Seven Seas forum, he explains why he will not be published NYMPHET, the comedy manga about a grade schooler’s attempts to have sex with her teacher: Basically it comes down to the race to get new titles licensed by American manga publishers due to the competitive market, and a change in contents as the story progressed:

In the case of NYMPHET, we placed an offer on it soon after the first volume of the tankoubon was released in Japan, with an option to license the rest of the series later on.

It was not until these past few days, actually, that I personally took the time to delve more closely into the rest of the series and the specific content of the subsequent volumes. Sure, I’d flipped through them before, and what I saw on a cursory glance seemed harmless enough. But this time I sat down and read the series carefully in Japanese, and what I found in volumes two and three were very disturbing. (Particularly, pages 129-131 in volume three, which are highly problematic.) So much so, that I now have to retract some of what I said in my first letter where I tried to defend the content, because certain scenes in the subsequent volumes are indefensible and inappropriate, in my opinion. (If there is blame to be cast, I’ll accept blame on our license acquisition and evaluation process. If you were to add up the large number of licenses we acquire, and the total number of volumes per series, it would come to literally hundreds of volumes that we would need to read and review in order to stay on top of all the content and make sure that it is appropriate. In this case, NYMPHET fell through the cracks in our review process.)

So, my primary reason for canceling NYMPHET is due to my recent realization that later volumes in the series can not be considered appropriate for the US market by any reasonable standard. For those of you who have been defending the title and have expressed anger about its cancellation, as a fan, I understand your frustration. But, at this point, I can only assume that you have not seen certain segments later in the series, just as I hadn’t, which very clearly cross the line, and which I can no longer stand by or support in good conscience.

DeAngelis also shows himself to be socially aware of the entire eco-system:

2) How will this affect the manga market as a whole?
My conclusion: I don’t know; I can not predict the future any better than anyone else can, but I certainly acknowledge the possibility, however remote, that the NYMPHET release could become a poster child by the mainstream media for everything that is wrong with manga. I love the manga industry and I delight in my job, and I would rather not take the risk of causing problems that could undermine this industry, especially in light of the escalating media scrutiny we have been getting on this title. (After Publisher’s Weekly contacted me for an interview on NYMPHET, it almost seemed like a matter of time before FOX or CNN picked up the story. Call me paranoid, but it’s not outside the realm of possibility…)

We read some of the posts afterwards, and frankly, these manga fans makes Newsarama fans look reasoned. Take poster Mikeysama for instance.

I do not approve of pedophilia, lets get that out of the way right now, and I don’t even have to point out why. But that does not mean that someone who writes about it or draws about it is a pervert. Its fantasy, fiction. I can’t really explain it, but somehow I don’t make the connection between a little girl in an anime or manga with a little girl in real life, because generally speaking, they’re totally different, and I believe this to be the general mindset of people who enjoy manga such as this. Manga is generally written by adults, thus children in a manga are of course going to have adult traits, as no adult can think from the point of view of a child, perhaps thats why I can’t make the connection. The manga doesn’t take itself to seriously, so why take it seriously like that?

You know, nevermind the fact that the manga was writen by a woman, which I think would have some bearing on weather or not this is acceptable.

Can we just say right here right now, that “just because a women did it, it’s okay?”is total bullshit? By that token Hilary Clinton should be elected with 100% of the vote.

For the record here’s our position on that: Just because a woman did it doesn’t mean it’s good; just because a man did it doesn’t mean it’s bad.

200705311110
Also, we’d like to speak to everyone said that “But SOUTH PARK puts kids in sexual situations and everybody loves SOUTH PARK!” SOUTH PARK features abstracted, paper cut outs of characters, and they are drawn to be as ugly and non-sexually suggestive as possible. That’s part of the joke. In fact that episode where Ms. Choksondik and Mr. Mackey had sex was perhaps the greatest aid to abstinence education ever aired on American television. From the excepts we’ve seen of NYMPHET, the child was shown aping the sexual mannerisms of older girls, and to be honest, didn’t look much different from the juvenile presentation of over-18 characters in other books. It was creepy. Period.

It’s these kind of subtle, nuanced positions that really get us into trouble, but we’re not ashamed of where we stand.

Book Expo America kicks off tomorrow, Friday, yet another reason we’re so cranky and overworked. This week’s Comics Week had a full listing of comics themed programming, of which there is a LOT. Alison Bechdel, Robert Kirkman, Kyle Baker, Colleen Doran and doubtless other ‘tooner types will be on hand. We’re interviewing Laurell K. Hamilton on Friday about her Marvel comics series. And Drawn & Quarterly has some signings, according to this PR:

This weekend from Friday, June 1st through Sunday June 3rd, Drawn & Quarterly will be at Book Expo America. You can find us in booth #3628, which is in our distributor’s aisle - Farrar, Straus & Giroux/Holtzbrink.

“Optic Nerve” cartoonist Adrian Tomine will be signing twice at the show on behalf of his Fall 2007 graphic novel “Shortcomings”: Friday, June 1st, 2-4:00 PM at the D+Q booth # 3628 and Saturday, June 2nd, 2:30-3:00 PM in the Autograph Area, table 19. He will be signing “Shortcomings” galleys, posters, and more. The Village Voice has described the upcoming book and Tomine as “one of the most masterful cartoonists of his generation. [Shortcomings] is equal parts poignant, hilarious and sad.”

D+Q EIC Chris Oliveros will be on the “Graphic Novel Buzz” panel Friday afternoon at 2:30-3:30 PM in room 1E03 at Javits and which will be moderated by Calvin Reid of Publishers Weekly.

D+Q will be handing out at a variety of “Shortcomings” promotional items (postcards, galleys, brochures, posters) at our booth and at Adrian’s signings. We will also be handing out Lynda Barry’s critically acclaimed FCBD issue “Activity Book” (which is an excerpt from her 2008 book “What It Is”), other D+Q galleys, and postcards for our 2007 list including Tove Jansson’s “Moomin,” Chris Ware’s “Acme Novelty Datebook,” Joe Matt’s “Spent,” Rutu Modan’s “Exit Wounds” and “James Sturm’s American: God, Gold and Golems.”D&Q at BEA

Diamond, Comic Foundry reach historic accord

05/31/07

Tim Leong reports on a compromise bill that all are happy with with a price drop the key concession:

All has been quiet on the magazine front — until now. I’m happy to report that Comic Foundry and Diamond have struck a compromise! Diamond Comics will distribute the magazine in September, and we will drop our cover price on the first issue from $6.25 to $5.98. Thems the terms.

Diamond was very gracious to reconsider the book and meet us half way on this. I hold no ill will against them, and let’s hope they feel the same way. I feel confident though, that despite the… unusual start we can continue on to forge a good business relationship.

IFL update

05/31/07

A quick catchup on the IFL, the MMA league co-owned by Wizard’s Gareb Shamus. Although it has been showing regularly on TV, it has had some business setbacks. Yesterday, their stock went down faster than a heavily hyped favorite in a UFC event, due in part to the announcement of a new TV deal! Wrestling expert Dave Meltzer had this to say:

IFL stock collapsed today. At the moment of this writing, it was down from its $3.30 per share close yesterday to $1.28. There was a major sell-off of 1.6 million shares of stock as some institutional investors were not allowed to sell until today, and sensing a collapse, they wanted to at least recover some money before the stock goes down farther. Another reason is the company is likely to issue new shares in an attempt of a second round of financing, which would also dilute the value of the stock. This actually should have been a good time as MyNetwork TV announced yesterday the IFL keeping its Monday and Saturday night at 8 p.m. time slot for the fall season. This was expected as in their upfront presentation weeks ago they had already told advertisers IFL was staying.

In addition, CMO Joel Ehrlich has stepped down, although he’ll remain as a consultant.

§ This nice lady is looking for an artist to illustrate a graphic novel about peregrine falcons.

I’ll warn right now that I’m a stickler for bird accuracy. The illustrations can be stylized, but the bird must have basic peregrine structure (ie malar stripes under the eyes and pointed wing tips). If you are interested and up to the challenge, send me some renderings of peregrines. Feel free to throw in other species as well, like red-tailed hawk, grackle, and blue-winged teal. Send queries and or images to sharon at birdchick dot com.

Teen Titans movie in works

05/31/07

200705310302Akiva Goldsman…boo. Mark Verheiden…Yay! :

DC Comics’ superteam Teen Titans is getting the big-screen treatment courtesy of Warner Bros. Pictures.

The live-action adaptation is being produced by Akiva Goldsman and Kerry Foster through their Weed Road banner, while Mark Verheiden has been brought on board to write the script.

[snip] Goldsman said the tone will be consistent with such recent Warners’ comic book fare as “Batman Begins,” “Superman Returns” and the upcoming “Watchmen.”

Trouble ahead for SIN CITY 2

05/31/07

200705310300
Uh oh. Despite all those assurances that SIN CITY 2 is just around the corner the fact that its co directors both have other projects to work on mean it has been delayed…and perhaps even…worse.

Yesterday, I told you about a little interview which featured Michael Madsen claiming that Sin City 2 might not be moving forward as planned due to the box office failures of Grindhouse. While we’re not entirely sure that Grindhouse played a part in this whole ordeal, Frank Miller told Rotten Tomatoes that the film has been officially delayed as both men gear up to take on separate projects before re-visiting the Sin City universe. Miller says, “Sin City 2 is still likely to happen, just not right away. The script is written and Robert [Rodriguez] and I are raring to go, but it looks like I’m going to be doing The Spirit first and Robert’s going to be doing Barbarella first.” Maybe it’s just me, but “likely to happen” isn’t the greatest confidence booster in the world. Was Miller holding a Magic 8-Ball when he was asked that question? “All signs point to This Sucks!”

Women etc.

05/31/07

200705310256Gah! Why do more interesting things keep coming in on that gender thing??? Damn you. Ike this story in THR about the difficulty in launching female action pics and how Robert Rodirguez is taking a flyer with his just announced BARBARELLA remake.

Rodriguez is dipping his laser gun into a subgenre where Hollywood has been traditionally gun-shy. Recent history has left a graveyard of tombstones reading such names as “Elektra,” “Catwoman” and “Aeon Flux,” while mausoleums house “Tank Girl” and “Barb Wire.” There are exceptions, of course, such as the “Tomb Raider” and “Underworld” movies, but their sequels failed to capitalize on any goodwill created by the first movies.

One manager says it doesn’t take X-ray vision to see studio sexism as part of the trouble. Female-oriented action movies, he reasons, take a hit when one fails, whereas a male-oriented action movie that misfires bounces off a studio’s back like a bullet off Superman.

“The studio translates those failures into, ‘It doesn’t matter if those were bad movies, female-led superhero movies don’t work,” says one manager, who has clients wanting to write those movies but says “studios won’t touch them with a 10-foot pole.”

But television is another story.

And while I don’t have the heart to write anything today, the 14th Carnival of Feminist Science Fiction and Fantasy Fans pretty much rounds everything up.

Oh and while it isn’t really woman related, the Icarus blog rounds up some disturbing manga-related news and runs a Nymphet post-mortem, which has officially been cancelled.

You know what burns my ass?

05/31/07

We’re stressed and crabby here at Stately Beat Manor. Deadlines, projects, research. Luckily about 85% of it is getting done, and that’s a fairly good percentage, but it’s taking a toll and we’re here to let you know we’ve had it up to HERE with the following:

• Microsoft Word’s Style Gallery. What the fuck is this anyway? Why can’t I just change my default font to Helvetica without going through some kind of asinine and over-complicated style changing global template rigamarole? I have met rocket scientists, brain surgeons and cancer researchers, but I have never met anyone who knew how to use Word’s Style Gallery.

• While I’m picking on Word, I hate “Clippie.” Yes, I am writing a letter, dumbass, and I don’t need your help! I know you can disable this in that mysterious “global command center” but it always seems to come back on, on PCs, anyway. Fun Fact: there are other Clippies, like a cat clippie and a little girl clippie, in case you don’t like the paper clip one. I have zero sympathy for the type of people who must be aided in their passage towards the mystical process of setting a tab that they need a cutesy animated “guide.” Seriously, MS Word is so evil…why does it double in size every time they upgrade it? I got even by stealing it off Limewire.

• Fucking printer cartridges the size of an agent’s heart. About five years ago I bought an Epson stylus printer for like $79. The ink cartridges were about the size of a pack of cards, and I had to change them maybe once every 9-12 months. Sure they cost $50 a pop for all four, but it was a reasonable expense.

Then, last fall I bought a Hewlett Packard printer/scanner/copier for $100. Decent deal I thought, except that in 9 months I have spent easily $200 on ink cartridges. Yes I know this is the current scam, but I never imagined it could be this venal and wasteful! I am currently going through many proofs of a 112 page graphic novel. Basically, I have to buy a new black cartridge every time I print out the lettering on a 26 page story to proof! (I can’t proof onscreen, as you may have noticed.) I have purchased two black cartridges this week alone! That’s outrageous!

Now, “Beat,” you may be asking, “why don’t you just, you know, print things at the office, in the King Missile tradition?” Well, first, that would be wrong. Second, the crappy PC I have at the office freezes up every time I open a TIF. I tried just what you suggest one evening, and didn’t leave the office until 10 pm because it took hours to print one story.

This dinky print cartridge scam is an affront against human decency, and wasteful to the environment, as well. Once things calm down I am investing in a home printer with an ink cartridge that can survive printing more than a single poem by e.e. cummings.

• Women’s issues and the illogical thinking they bring out from EVERYONE. I am especially sick of talking about the sexualization of children! If you like reading stories about sexy children, I want nothing to do with you, get it? I am sick of all this gender stuff because I have to live it every day. I am sick of being a woman! From now on I’m a dog on the internet.

• A flame about this high.

NYMPHET controversy rears adorable head

05/30/07

200705300306
We don’t have time today to do justice to this Nymphet controversy. Suffice to say that Seven Seas has been forced to postpone publication of NYMPHET, a popular Japanese comic about a grade schooler who has a crush on her teacher. And by crush, we mean she throws her panties at him and begs him to have sex with her. For more info, check out Journalista, Tintin and Manstream. While Seven Seas’s head Jason DeAngelis defends his right to publish NYMPHET in an apparently now-removed letter reproduced on Dirk’s blog, if you read the caption in the lower left hand corner above, you may get some idea of why publishing this book here may not be the best idea.

In Japan, young girls on the “cusp” of adolescence begging for grown up and explicit sexual acts may be fine and dandy and utterly hilarious but here in the good old US of A, it is frowned on. If Dale Earnhardt were still with us, he would frown on it, that’s for sure. Elvis too, at least in public. They would frown and then beg for good, old fashioned, squeaky clean tentacle rape.

Pizzeria Kamikaze writer Etgar Keret wins at Cannes

05/30/07

Jeff Mason sends out a press release to alert is to the fact that Marjane Satrapi was not the only comics-type to win rexognition at the recent Canne Film Festival — Sometimes comics writer Etgar Keret won the Camera d’Or prize\:

Israeli writers Etgar Keret and his wife Shira Geffen won the Camera d’Or prize, given to the best film by debut directors at the Cannes film festival for their film “Meduzot” (“Jellyfish”). The film, based on a script written by Geffen and directed by her and Keret, is about the life of three women in Tel Aviv. “Everything here is so far from our lives,” said Keret, wearing a tuxedo and bow tie at the glittering red-carpet award ceremony Sunday, May 27. “I haven’t worn a suit since my bar mitzvah.” Keret and Gefen also won the “Young Critics” award and the French Artist and Writers Guild (Société des Auteurs et Compositeurs Dramatiques) award for best directors.

The Camera d’Or Prize is considered the most prestigious for debut directors – it is for first features in the entire festival, regardless of category. Thirty-three other films were nominated in that category.

200705291007
Winner Tom Richmond blogs the Reuben weekend, as with the above picture of Mell Lazarus, THE NEW YORKER’S Mort Gerberg, editorial cartoonist & GRIMMY creator Mike Peters.

I’m back from another terrific time at the NCS Reuben awards. The board members and officers really work hard to make this event fun, entertaining and relaxing every year. They secure the sponsorship of the major syndicates like United Media, King Features and others to pay for lavish dinners, parties and gatherings throughout the weekend, which also includes a number of guest speakers and plenty of time left over to hang out with friends and colleagues. Sleep is often an afterthought, with parties going until the wee hours every day.

Mike Lynch has a ton of pictures, as well.

Tom has the complete list of winners but we’ll copy part of it here just to show that Gene Yang won the Comic Book category

Decision at Downtown…deferred!

05/29/07

War!
Word on today’s scheduled mediation between Gary Groth and Harlan Ellison and their assembled legal teams: Postponed until June 28th!

The rescheduling was necessitated because of a conflict in Groth’s schedule, according to Ellison’s lead lawyer, John Carmichael.

However, Carmichael says that all the lawyers involved are looking forward to settling the matter. Carmichael himself is eager to resolve the dispute “so my client can get on to more productive things and we can all put this behind us.”

Silver Surfer vs. the US Mint!!!

05/29/07

Who wouldn’t like a piece of the Silver Surfer? Maybe even to carry around in your pocketses. That must have been what 20th Century Fox and the Franklin Mint were thinking when they cooked up the “Silver Surfer Quarter”, above. Since the Zenn-La native does not appear on any US States quarters, he had to be stamped onto existing currency. But shockingly, putting an ad on legal tender is against the law!

The U.S. Mint said in a news release Friday that it learned of the promotional quarter this week and advised the studio and The Franklin Mint they were breaking the law. It is illegal to turn a coin into an advertising vehicle, and violators can face a fine.
Story continues below ↓advertisement

“The promotion is in no way approved, authorized, endorsed, or sponsored by the United States Mint, nor is it in any way associated or affiliated with the United States Mint,” according to the release. The federal mint did not say whether the studio or the private Franklin Mint would face a penalty.

The altered coins are quarters honoring the state of California that entered circulation in 2005. They feature George Washington on the front, as usual, but a colorized version of the character on the back. All 40,000 are slated to be in circulation throughout the country by the end of Memorial Day weekend, and about 800 were released in each state.

Star Wars Celebration wrap-up

05/29/07

There was a huge Star Wars convention in LA this weekend to celebrate Star Wars’ 30th Anniversary, which kicked off all sorts of news and notes and photo ops .ICv2 News has the ultimate skinny:

The upshot of all this attention? Star Wars is a more potent force now that it was when the first movie exploded onto the scene. Star Wars merchandise last year accounted for $1.5 billion in retail sales, a small fraction of the $22 billion the franchise has generated since the first movie premiered. And the masterfully created marketing events surrounding the anniversary demonstrate that Lucasfilms is very capable of continuing the popularity of the brand even without any new feature films.

The big news was the debut of the trailer for the CGI CLONE WARS cartoon. It’s set in a time when everyone is alive, so it’s kind of bittersweet, like “The Death of Speedy”, but it should also suit George Lucas since he won’t have to deal with pesky human actors any more. (Yoda: “We keep stepping in Dooku!”) Plus more General Grievous, and we love General Grievous.

There was also a mass Slave Leia photo shoot, proving you can have six whole movies of action, and the one cheesecake moment will be the one everyone remembers. Although as Cecil points out, its the rearview that separates the great Leias from the also-rans.

Oh yeah, and Stormtrooper Elvis got his own mini-bust from Gentle Giant, which was raffled off for charity.

We are just too swamped to do our TUF recap this week! Luckily Rafael Kayanan has a very thorough examination of the surprising Lauzon/Cole fight. As far as we’re concerned, the most notable thing about this episode was Lobstah, fight instigator getting kicked out while in the middle of making lobstah chowdah!!! That was tragic.

“Protect yourself at all times” is an old boxing adage which fighter Cole Miller found to be a very relevant one in this week’s segment of TUF when he faced the excellent, but sometimes wild ground and pound style of Joe Lauzon.
