THB lands at First Second

07/25/07

Thb-Comics-From-Mars
As far as we’re concerned, THIS is the first big announcement of the show: First Second has picked up Paul Pope’s long unavailable SF/fantasy epic THB. (Shown above a con special edition of THB available only at AdHouse. GET IT QUICK!

First Second Books announced today its plan to publish Paul Pope’s highly anticipated multi-volume Martian epic, TOTAL THB, as well as an original commission for young readers, BATTLING BOY.

Pope’s sprawling TOTAL THB-a full-color, four-volume set totaling over 1200 pages-is scheduled to release in 2009. (An oversize Deluxe Collectors edition in black and white is planned as well). TOTAL THB will include the never-before-seen final chapters of the story, whose teenage heroine HR Watson comes of age on Mars with her extraordinary protector ‘THB’, a water-activated, inflatable bodyguard.

BATTLING BOY, to be published as a series in two simultaneous volumes, introduces a youthful hero who faces off against various demons in the city of Monstropolis. It will be released by First Second in 2008.

Says Pope, “I’m excited about the alliance THB will have with First Second. Mark Siegel is an old-time fan of the series, and together we will finally be getting the entire THB story out there-in full color and in a series of beautifully designed trade paperbacks, falling right on the heels of BATTLING BOY.”

Mark Siegel, Editorial Director of First Second, adds, “THB is a major milestone in graphic novels, and BATTLING BOY is highly accessible, his most mainstream project yet, and will introduce Paul Pope to a whole new world of readers.”

Dubbed the “Jim Morrison of American comics”, Pope has earned a sizeable reputation in the industry with his virtuoso brushwork and unmistakable blend of American, Japanese, and European influences. THB-Pope’s magnum opus-has gained an international audience through his self-published serialization.

Pope concludes, “I’ve always called THB my Dune. THB is the American Akira. It’s big and shimmering and strange and new, and hopefully it will reach a wide audience of readers who really love comics.”

San Diego: with charity towards all

07/25/07

As regular readers of this blog may be are aware, the city of San Diego has been undergoing some fiscal distress of late, so perhaps it should come as no surprise that they are wondering just how Comic-con can be a tax-free charity perhaps with an eye to glomming a new revenue stream.

But the 38th annual San Diego Comic-Con International, which opens tonight, is registered with the federal government as a public charity, placed in the same general category as many schools, hospitals and churches.

As such, the pop-culture extravaganza, which generates about $5 million in revenue each year, is exempt from income taxes and pays less in city traffic-control fees.

That loss of money to government coffers means the public is, in effect, subsidizing an event that has become a massive promotional vehicle for new movies, TV shows, comics and toys.

The article points out that Fleet Week and the Tournament of Roses are also non profits. Con spokesperson David Glanzer explains that there is an educational element:

“We strive to inform the public that comics are as viable an art form as other art you may find in a museum, or in a gallery, or a bookstore or even a film festival,” said David Glanzer, director of marketing and public relations for the convention.

“In addition, as the medium has branched out to film, television and interactive multimedia, we offer a venue where the public can meet the actual creators in those fields and interact with them to further their understanding of this industry that has a historic and ongoing contribution to arts and culture.”

Yeah! Culture! Hands off Comic-Con you people!

Spanish Cartoon Crisis: Day Cinco

07/25/07

Metabunker has continuing coverage on the ongoing turmoil over a El Jueves cover which mocked the Spanish royal family and which has led to legal action against the magazine. Cartoonist Guillermo and writer Manel FontdeVila are set to appear in court today (or did as you read this)

Not content to have forced its retraction by the publishers and closed down most of their website, the state prosecutor (apparently, the royals themselves haven’t addressed the cartoon at all) is going all the way. Guillermo and FontdeVila risk up to two years in jail.

While this sounds like some sort of grandstanding play by the prosecutor all the way, the damage against El Jueves (which we hear the King himself reads regularly) would appear to be clear.

The Con C De Arte blog by cartoonist Pepo also has full coverage en Español for those who can read it.

Jenna Jameson at Virgin

07/25/07

Jenna H1 Copy (2)As always, the jokes write themselves. Former porn superstar Jameson’s previous comics connections include working with Bernard Chang on illustrated portions of HOW TO MAKE LOVE LIKE A PORN STAR, the book she co-wrote with Neil Straus.

World-famous entrepreneur, adult entertainment icon and New York Times best-selling author Jenna Jameson is creating and staring in her own series of comic books, it was announced today by Virgin Comics CEO, Sharad Devarajan, at Comic-Con, the industry’s annual super-festival in San Diego. The series, titled Shadow Hunter, debuts in comic shops and online comic retailers in December. The complete 144 page Shadow Hunter book will be available in June 2008 at all major book sellers. A new site, JennaComix.com will host additional information, previews and pre-orders of the comic art and books.

Shadow Hunter is the story of a provocative superheroine who survives a brush with death only to find herself fighting the legions of hell for her very soul. Cover art for the first issue has been created by Greg Horn, a top illustrator of comic books and video games. The story, while provocative and sexy, contains no nudity and is intended for a mainstream audience.

“Jenna Jameson is a cultural force,” said Virgin Comics CEO Sharad Devarajan. “She is an entrepreneur who is taking the taboo to the mainstream and has built an industry around her brand.”

“I’m thrilled to be collaborating with Virgin to bring this story to life, first as comics and eventually in film and other formats,” said Jenna Jameson. “Working with comics is creatively liberating – everything is possible. My character is sultry, sexy and kicks ass!’

“Jenna brings a defiance and edge to everything she does, said Gotham Chopra, Chief Creative Officer of Virgin Comics. “She’s a provocateur and there’s no doubt that our creative team at Virgin is going to have a blast collaborating with her. I can assure you every artist we have in our studio is vying to get assigned to this project!”

San Diego Comic-Con is preparing for record crowds when Jenna makes her very first appearance at this event that attracts more than 100,000 fans. Jenna will be speaking about Shadow Hunter and signing autographs for fans on Saturday afternoon, July 28 at 4:30 PM. Images from the series will be available from the Virgin Comics booth at the San Diego Convention Center.

More writers writing comics

07/25/07

In case you missed PW Comics Week (and if you did FOR SHAME!) Oni is the latest publisher to announce a literary graphic novel line as Karin Slaughter is setting up an imprint.

International bestselling thriller writer Karin Slaughter is launching a new graphic novel imprint at Oni Press, starting with her own The Recidivists, slated to appear in spring 2009. The Slaughterhouse line will feature original comic books and graphic novels written by established prose writers.

Slaughter, who has more than five million books in print worldwide, is a longtime comics fan, said Oni publisher Joe Nozemack. During discussions with Oni about publishing her own graphic novel, it became apparent that she had access to other prose fiction writers who would be interested in creating original works for the graphic novel format, and Slaughterhouse was born.

AICN goes nerdtastic over Paul Pope

The Hollywood Reporter has a brief but trenchant interview with Neil Gaiman. The whole thing is worth reading, but this was the funniest bit:

THR: Did you worry about it backfiring on you, if the fans didn’t like it?

Gaiman: Oh sure. The time that I saw it backfire worst was when I was on a Vertigo panel and (Vertigo editor) Karen Berger announced to a hall of 4,000 people, “The biggest news item I’ve got is that Warner Bros. is going to make a John Constantine movie (2005’s ‘Constantine’)!” And the whole hall erupted in cheering. And then she said, “And he’s going to be played by Keanu Reeves!” And the whole hall went, “Oh … .” And that was it. It ended at that moment for that film, and honestly, if anyone from Warner Bros. had been in the hall, they should’ve gotten on the phone to say, “The Keanu Reeves thing is not going to work. Can we give him money to go away?” But nobody did, and the fans had washed their hands of “Constantine” before it came out because they knew it wasn’t the thing they wanted to see. Generally speaking with comics, the closer the movie is to the source material in terms of look and feel, the better it works. And the more studios assume that you can put Batman in a pink costume and nobody will notice, the more everybody notices. They never quite figure that one out. So it’s worth reminding people that in addition to all the movie stuff at Comic-Con, there’s a really quite wonderful comics convention going on where they can learn something … if they can get a hotel room.

The Hero Initiative: Chicago is the new San Diego

San Diego City Beat salutes the Simpson who learns:

You see, Lisa is almost 20 years of our national conscience—smart and talented, sensitive and decent. She is absolutely the John Edwards of The Simpsons: qualified, presentable and totally overshadowed by the more glamorous members of her pack. We feel superior to Homer because he’s so dumb. Bart’s schtick played better in the ’90s than it does in the new millennium. Marge has just never been all that interesting, and Maggie has said just one word in almost two decades of toddlerdom. But Lisa? She’s the only family member to have actually evolved in almost 20 years and the one who represents the best qualities in all of us. We’ve just been too busy watching Bart and Homer to notice.

Rise and Shine

07/25/07

People are very excited about Comic-Con.

And so are we. We’re off. We won’t be giving exhaustive news updates here — there are plenty of sites with entire TEAMS of people to do that — we’ll just be hitting the highlights and blogging The Beat’s Comic-Con.

BTW just incase anything goes completely wonky here and Wordpress goes Folder 13, check our old emergency Blogger blog, 7th World.

Big thanks to Mark Coale, Jeff Newelt and Ben McCool for all their help in the last few days.

The last word

07/24/07

Every year there is one post or quote or something that exemplifies what it is like to be part of the big show, and this year, Mariah Huehner said it as she contemplates her first San Diego ever.

It feels like, right now, to me at least, that many of the people I know are having lives that’re taking off, Mine included. It’s very strange and amazing and completely immediate. That’s how right now feels. It’s like sitting in your car with music playing and you’re on a long stretch of highway. And a song you love but haven’t heard in awhile comes on. You can see your life stretching out in front of you and at the same time you can tangibly feel your life happening. Who you are, what you’re doing, where you were, and possibly where you’re going. Although where you’re going is the part that is happening right now and the fact that you know part of it, but not the whole, is the exhilarating, terrifying, goose-bumpy part. The part that makes everything more alive and real and NOW. Because you can feel it happening right NOW.

Yeah that’s it. Enjoy it while you can, everyone. IDT acquires controlling interest in IDW

07/24/07

And…the news just keeps coming, as multi pronged telecom IDT has acquired a controlling interest in comics publisher IDW. Some hint of this development was dropped recently when IDT VP Clifford Meth switched over to become a VP at IDW.

IDT Internet Mobile Group (IMG), a division of IDT Corporation, has formed Zedge Studios to develop and license digital content for distribution through web and mobile platforms. Additionally, IMG has acquired a controlling interest in IDW Publishing (www.idwpublishing.com), a leading independent comics publisher pre-eminent in the horror, action, and sci-fi genres, boasting such high-profile titles as The Transformers, 30 Days of Night, CSI, Star Trek, 24, and Scarface.

Moshe Berger, formerly CEO of IDT Entertainment, which was sold to Liberty Media in 2006, is now working towards making IDT’s Internet Mobile Group an industry leader. “We have seen the explosion of digital content, especially user-generated content, over a variety of platforms,” said Mr. Berger, IMG CEO and head of Zedge Studios. “This is what the new generation of consumers craves. Our intention is for Zedge Studios to become the worldwide destination for content on the web and on mobile devices. IDW Publishing’s stellar reputation in the comics and graphic novel arenas and its emphasis on original intellectual properties in the action and horror genres are a perfect fit for Zedge Studios. Working closely with IDW’s brilliant management and creative team will bring us one step closer to achieving our global goal.”

An established leader in the comic book and graphic novel marketplace, IDW Publishing has been named “Publisher of the Year” by Diamond Comic Distributors for the previous three years. In keeping with that honor, IDW maintains a commitment to nurturing original content from its dynamic creative roster. For instance, Sam Raimi (Spider-Man) and his Ghost House Pictures optioned the rights to 30 Days of Night from IDW Publishing and are producing the live-action feature film adaptation of the original horror work, published by IDW and created by Steve Niles and Ben Templesmith. Columbia Pictures is scheduled to release the film, which stars Josh Hartnett, in October.

Ebay spoils Wolverine

07/24/07

This auction for Wolverine #55 with the variant cover is apparently a spoiler or something.
Personally, we just like the nice EC homage.

Morning Briefing: Y, Hex, Watchmen, UGO, etc.

07/24/07

Just a few entertainment briefs as we deal with last minute stuff:

§ The Y THE LAST MAN movie has a writer and director, D.J. Caruso and Carl Ellsworth, whose previous credits include DISTURBIA. Caruso will direct while Ellsworth writes.

The comic, created by Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra, centers on Yorick, an escape artist who is the last survivor of a mysterious plague that has killed every single male mammal in the world. With his male pet monkey, he sets out to find what might have wiped out the world’s male chromosomes.

Mason Novick is exec producing.

Caruso and Ellsworth became hot properties with “Disturbia,” the teen-skewing “Rear Window”-like thriller made for $20 million that has grossed about $80 million.

§ Also over at WB, Jonah Hex may be riding to the screen.

Warner Bros. Pictures is saddling up to bring DC Comics’ Western anti-hero comic book “Jonah Hex” to the big screen, with filmmakers Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor on board to adapt. Andrew Lazar is producing via his Mad Chance Prods., as is Akiva Goldsman.

The filmmakers are not making a straight-ahead Western but plan to develop the character with some of the supernatural overtones in the hopes of creating a franchise. Greg Silverman and Elishia Holmes are overseeing for Warners. Gregory Noveck is overseeing for DC. Neveldine and Taylor wrote and directed “Crank,” which starred Jason Statham.

Meanwhile purported Watchmen casting is leaking out, and it’s not quite the star-studded affair originally seen — which might be just as well, becuase the BO potential of an R-Rated superhero movie has always been WATCHMEN’s Achilles heel.

The IESB can exclusively report that the role of Adrian Veidt/Oxymandias in Zack Snyder’s Watchmen has been given to Matthew Goode. Goode joins the likes of Billy Crudup as Dr. Manhatton, Patrick Wilson as The Night Owl (both confirmed by our source), Malin Ackerman as Silk Spectre (LR) and Jackie Earle Haley as Rorschach.

Goode is an English actor who studied at the Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Arts in London and has starred in a few films including Match Point, The Lookout and most recently Brideshead Revisited with Emma Thompson and Michael Gambon.

§ Finally, pop culture site and old school website UGO has been sold to Hearst:

On Tuesday morning, Hearst was expected to announce the acquisition of UGO Networks, a collection of Web sites targeting young men interested in video games, sports and pictures of hot girls. UGO claims 11 million unique visitors a month. Terms of the deal, which took two years to come to fruition, were not disclosed. Forbes estimates the acquisition to be in the neighborhood of $100 million.

New York City-based UGO is one of the last Web 1.0 holdouts to have a successful outcome. Sites with video and user-generated content, commonly referred to as Web 2.0, have been taking over. Most startups from the Web 1.0 era either went on to great success (Amazon, eBay, Yahoo) or were decimated at the turn of the century (Pets.com, Etoys, Webvan). And the few companies that survived raised such ridiculous amounts of money that just about any exit is sure to be an unprofitable one.

I 0656
As we previously (we think) mentioned, we’ll be at the Fox Atomic booth at various times, but we’ll also be VIDEO BLOGGING THE SHOW AGAIN! Bruce at DiVX and the rest of the great crew that helped us finally find the FulFillment Room last year will be back and we have some cool peeps lined up to chat up, and we’ll be doing our own nutty little things, as well. We have only one panel, and as usual it’s 10:30 Saturday morning and we’ll be yakking about comics writing, a topic near and dear to our hearts.

And of course, we’ll be staggering back to our hotel room late at night and uploading photos, and waking up at an ungodly hour, propelled only by Vietnamese instant coffee and blogging as much as we can. In brutal honesty, we don’t know how efficacious we’ll be — this year’s party slate is BRUTAL — but we’ll do our best to bring you some impressionistic word pictures.

Twittering Comic-con — UPDATE AGAIN

07/24/07

Dear Alex Billington of FirstShowing.net writes to let us know that he’ll be covering San Diego’s multi media news via Twitter. Wasn’t it only a few weeks ago that we wrote this

2008: On a panel at San Diego, Heidi MacDonald says she really doesn’t like Scott McCloud and has just been being nice to his face all these years. Luckily, since there are 10,000 blogs, podcasts, video blogs and movies about the show, no one ever really notices.

Imagine everyone Twittering about San Diego.

IT WOULD BE JUST LIKE BEING THERE. Only you wouldn’t be waiting half an hour at the railroad tracks. But you also couldn’t eat a fish taco. So…it’s a trade-off.

UPDATE: Great here’s another Twitter-con: Marvel’s Agent M.
