well I certainly wasn't calling TB out as there has been lots of academic and pseudo-academic coverage here (as opposed to the Lostian "Others"). And nor do I think anyone can cover it all given all the area SDCC covers, I think that is sort of the point/problem. but maybe an embarassment of riches, too.

Heidi, I'm a bit surprised you didn't have anything to say about the expanded presence of book publishers at Comic-Con this year. Publishers that had booths included Random House/Pantheon/Del Rey/Villard, Abrams, First Second, W. W. Norton (as part of Fantagraphics), Scholastic, and Papercutz (in a separate area from NBM), just to name a few. There were also several graphic novel panels as well as spotlights on graphic novelists. This is definitely a trend to watch at the show, and apparently several other publishers were on the waiting list to exhibit, having heard that Comic-Con is the place to reach their graphic novel audience.

I know there has been Beat coverage of CAC in the past (maybe before there was the Beat was the name), since I've done write-ups of panels that I have been a part of the years that I went.

IIRC, it used to get "better coverage" back when it held the same time as the lame lamented PRO/CON and EXPO on Tuesday and Wednesday.

I forgot to mention Heidi, that I totally disagree with you about the con banning cosplay on the convention floor. It's not something I'd do, but for a lot of people it's a lot of fun, they get attention from others, and even though I agree it causes logjams, a lot of people that don't dress up like to see these colorful characters running around.

Heide, I'm glad I got to say hi to you briefly at the big show.

You missed two of the best panels (on Friday): Alison Bechdel (Fun Home) and Miriam Katin (We Are On Our Own) who both had excellent power point presentations, that were far from being stuffy or boring. I'm sorry I missed Lily Renee's panel (although I did see her on the sliver age / golden age panel).

On the subject of some San Diego con events taking place in neighboring hotels, actually probably the only one in which that would be possible would be the Marriot and I don't think they'd be too receptive to that. Even the Hyatt is too far of a walk from the covention center for a lot of people and all of the other hotels are across the train / trolley tracks which creates problems with as often as those pass by.

San Diego Comic Con scares me in ways that I cannot describe, and I know someone who actually took the time to go there. If next year's situation is anything like you describe, I think I will stay put where I am.

Nice wrap-up. I was there and I didn't know half of those people were there (!) so it's been good to read these firsthand accounts of the glitterati. It was my first con (blush) and I found it pretty overwhelming. And yeah I said where's the comics but that's a good thing -- I would way rather see props from The Golden Compass than just a million Golden Age booths like pale tan spiders -- I think its good they can all co-exist, more or less, at different places. Comics people should be going to their parties (are they cool though?) thanking their Odins that Hollywood doesn't (knock on wood) spin off its own show instead of crashing Comic-con. My left foot hurt all the time. And that Owly guy charged way too much for his stuff. The AdHouse people were cool, same with ComicCraft, same with the Black Coat guy and Tom Scioli. And the fact that Joe Kelly and/or Joe Casey were at their booth ready to meet people at any given time. Ok, so I don't have nearly the name list as up above, but I saw Stan Lee! Stan Lee! Smiling like a 17 year old. Made my visit.

But a Neil Gaiman approved line of CORSETWARE? Really? Is that better or worse than CORSETRY? for some reason that really stunned me.

I think Whitney Matheson is a good blogger with a quirky/cute chip, but she's about as "into comics" as my old barber who had the same issue of Defenders on the table for fifteen years.

Anyway, what I really wanted to say is where's the media coverage of the Comic Arts Conference? Did anyone go here, Beat readership? I'm being serious. Not to be rude (I'm speaking generally of all sites/bloggers), but is comics journalism today People or The New Yorker? Granted it was academics mostly (pale ones) but we had some very good sized attendance. And it is a SDCC event. We didn't have Whitney Matheson or Olivia Munn but we did have a lot of fascinating presentations -- if movies make comics more $ (I guess) and cooler (very very debatable) then it is the academics who will give it more life beyond an opening weekend -- if people start listening to us, that comics are important, then we get ensconced in universities. Then it's immortality, baby -- for all of us. Look what it did for "Media Studies" and "Spanish." I for one busted open the identity of Lois Lane -- a secret that's been held for 70 years! for reals! (hear the three people who care sigh in relief). We also had some other controversy, which is alluded to in The Beat's previous SDCC post. I think we need to PR ourselves more. So come next year all!!! See the show!! Go to a panel where people won't ask "Is it true the Skrull storyline was thought up by Whitney Matheson?" sigh sigh sigh face it, we just need Tricia Helfer.

sort of related: I went to Japan afterwards and made it to the International Manga Museum. unbelievable. I thought the Japanese were just really into comics. That is completely wrong. It is a completely different paradigm.

I believe the reason the hotels aren't taking reservations yet is that general reservations (dunno about any special or bulk corporate deals) open up only 330 days before, similar to airplane reservations at most airlines (Southwest is a more limited exception).

Great coverage of a side of the con I've never seen (i.e. the "in" side)!

Semi-random: I noticed your picture of the Pirates booth has the same dust motes/mist orbs that mine does. It really makes me wonder just what was in the air right there. Even if it were sand from inside the booth, you'd think it would show up in pictures of both the fore and stern of the ship, not just this angle.

You need to just stay up the road at the Embassy Heidi. I rerally wanted to be next door or across the street for SDCC, but the free breakfast the Embassy provided saved me. That really good meal kept me going all day long without any problems till the evening when it was time for some dinner, or back to the Embassy for the free manager's reception with an open bar and snacks. All of this easily made up for the 10 minute or so walk to the convention center. Plus, the have a Starbucks connected to the hotel if you need your fix.
