The Beat, actually, no I wasn't. :(

I think you know, as well as any New Yorker, that the city actually kinda 'clears out' in the summertime, with all the commuters racing this way and that. So while the outside of the Con may be pleasant, the numbers of people drawn to the actual event may be lessened by the draw of the Hamptons, Jones and the Jersey shore.

Just a thought.

I don't think that sites can be blamed for labeling their panel coverage by the name of the panel. Why title it DARK HORSE COLLECTS MYSPACE COMICS when it covers so much more? I think the fact that it winds up as THE DARK HORSE PANEL is more of the fault of the PR machine. When you bunch up everything into a panel and there is so much going on over the course of a weekend, you're going to see the reporting leave it just as bunched up as you delivered it.

Why should packaging a publishers announcements for maximum publicity effect fall on the shoulders of the reporting and blogging masses rather than the PR muckety mucks being paid by the publishers?

Michael:

I hope that A, 2 sequence was a joke!

Kiel, you are partially right. I think fewer outlets than you think get advance announcements. I know even when I was in the Pulse we didn't get them any more...that could be for various reasons.

While the weather this year was fabulous, I don't think a winter weather next year is going to matter much.

A. Global Warming.

2. I think that since during the warmer weather, a lot of NY'ers and other tri-state area peeps, go out to beachier areas, so there might be a bigger loss there.

I dunno, I had fun at the convention but that was because I went there to Shamelessly Self Promote. But It didnt feel the same as the Big Apple Con. I guess it was the fact the Javits is HUGE compared to the Penn Plaza Hotel, plus it felt more...Commercial. (Yes I realize both conventions are Commercial events) But Big Apple Con feels More Organic, I come home tired but creatively turbo Charged where as with the NYCC I was Wicked Drained.
Any Way It was great being there, And I think I might have met you Heidi...peace.

Hooray for reports!

I'm kind of bummed now that I didn't get to hit the journalism panel, but hey...I didn't get to hit any panels! I'd have to say that the whole "Dark Horse Panel" versus "Dark Horse to Collect" phenomenon is more a result of poor news hunting chops on the part of the writers than it is a PR failure. 90% of the time, sites receive this info in advance of the show, and that practice has (at least I think) made news outlets lazy in chasing down what they think is the biggest story at a show and trying to inform folks about it. Most of the writers for any site big or small are kids just out of college who are huge fans of the material, and all the instruction they get from site owners and editors is "take this laptop and get me a panel write up withing ten minutes of the panel ending!"

Identifying the big announcements and providing context for them isn't happening at the news writing level anymore. It's all on blogs and in message boards, where PR folks have little or no sway.

This was my first con and I think it's going to spoil me for other ones. The weather was great, I met a ton of nice people and the crowds were about what I expected (given what I had read about other cons). If I had regrets it's that I probably didn't go to enough panels and that I never really found out about these after-con parties (I went by myself). It would have been nice to have chatted with some of the people I read online or meet some of the creators outside of the con atmosphere.

Then again, I'm "just" a fan, so I think there has to be a realistic expectation of meeting people. But I think several dealers and a bunch of artists made good money off me that weekend. Plus, whatever complaints others might have had, I can think of very few (perhaps the minor fiasco involving signing tickets on Saturday). I had a blast.

The Super Bowl is on a Sunday, so that effect is mitigated. The convention rental on that weekend might be less, allowing for cheaper table rates. I watch the game for the commercials, so no big loss.
PR... the publishers should have someone taking minutes at each panel, with distribution to the con site or at the press room. The con site could also double as a centralized place to discover booth signings.
I missed the PW booth somehow, but met both Heidi and Calvin. Talked with lots of people, helped answer some questions, and bought some old school GNs! (Melody, Toth's Zorro, Moore and Davis's Quinch...)
Fantastic show! But how did MTV cover it?

You buried the lead, Heidi.

It should have been about you and Whitney peacably co-existing and not having a UFC-style throwdown right there in front of someone's booth. :>

I would prefer an April date, too. The winter weather for years 1 & 2 wasn't too bad, and I'm an old hand at schlepping through cold weather, but gosh, you just can't beat the kind of weather we got last weekend.

And I'll try to live with the devastating knowledge that Tom Spurgeon thinks I'm a moron.
