@Tony Tower: Do not worry about it, I am not new to the internets. I mostly did this to promote Shatner's song and to practice video editing (I just got the new version of Sony Vegas) and it was fun. There are some really weird reactions, though--obviously, at least in the beginning, I'm poking some fun at slash stories regarding Kirk and Spock... some felt that I was pushing some homosexual agenda. Yeah. Because, when the gays finally take over, they'll do it through cartoon mashups.

(I like the NIN one better, BTW)

Kirkslashspock: I apologize for the snark. This is something you did for fun - which is is - and I shouldn't hammer you with my over-perfectionist tendancies.

I bought HAS BEEN when it came out, though, and "Common People" has been rocking my iPod for as long as I've had one. But I'm sure this will be someone's first exposure for the track, and that IS work well done.

Sorry,

The third reason would have been I couldn't find an actual relevant shot, and got lazy and just slapped anything in there. (The Enterprise with the red background is an example).

Hey, thanks for the link to my video.

@Tony Tower: the shots were chosen in order for three reasons, either they mirrored what was happening in the lyrics (such as the giant Spock touching the normal sized Spock's head and saying "Cut your hair and get a job"), or it was easy to get loop animation so that the lips were in synch (for the most part... towards the end I did give up on two shots).

Most people seem to enjoy it, I'm sorry you didn't; however, if it exposed you to Shatner's version of "Common People" for the first time and find you love it, then it did it's job.

Great idea, I LOVE the "Common People" track. . . but man, is that execution lousy. To channel Chandler Bing for a moment. . . "Could the shots BE any more random?"

What a coincidence - I just got finished watching the entire DVD set of ST: The Animated Series and I couldn't find this anywhere in the DVD extras.

Thank you so much for this. I love me some William Shatner, and with Boston Legal on hiatus, I need to feed that particular monkey with things like this.

William Shatner doing a cover of a Pulp song is, yes, the greatest thing ever.

"Wow. Good lyrics. My neighborhood was middle-middle class. Grew up comfortable, but with a tight budget and few luxuries. Went to a high school further out in the ‘burbs of Omaha, which was desegrated, so learned all about class distinctions there. 20th reunion coming up. Gonna celebrate it by ignoring it completely (although I have a temptation to sabotage the golf outing)."

Check out more of Pulp's discography, most of their music dealt with such themes.

It's Ben Folds doing the music and arrangement (from his Has Been album), but it's Joe Jackson on vocals with Shatner.

Pure joy...Shatner does do a surprisingly great job of following Jarvis on that cover (actually Shatner's album in and of itself is pretty good).

Thanks for this post...made my morning.
