Personally I like how Hewlett's monkey has traditional design elements from Beijing Opera.
I also like how the opening, like his and Albarn's 2006 opera "Monkey: Journey to the West", mimics the opening credits of the Tv show "Monkey!", a UK overdubbed version of a Japanese 1970s live action show called "Saiyuki". I think the Brit version of "Monkey!" showed in every English speaking country except the U.S.A.

And this:

"As far as we can tell, the 2 minute video is about 23 times better than the the new MUMMY movie..."

is funnier than anything in the new Mummy movie.

Oh how the might Beeb has fallen! From anouncers wearing formal "monkey suits" to having a monkey host their Olympic coverage!

The official mascots of Beijing can be found here:
http://en.beijing2008.cn/spirit/beijing2008/graphic/n214068254.shtml
and they actually seem better than the typical mascot. (How many past Olympic mascots can you name?) Vancouver is the coolest... they've got a sasquatch! (insert Canadian doping joke here)

No official word from London. Maybe a hedgehog?
