Lifestyle and cute comic couples?

Why does the focus always have to shift off of the reason for this publication even existing?

Hey Laura, yeah, I have (although not as thoroughly as the first issue). I was just mentioning it in case you guys had plans to do it again. The mag's getting better and better by the way. The last issue was the best so far and I really like the switch to color!

And yeah, I have no complaints at all with the coverage inside--you guys do spread it around--but the cover to a magazine is it's "face" and very important to the initial and overall impression of a magazine, in my opinion. Especially for people who may have never read an issue or don't have any idea what it's about. I really hope that you guys will spread the love on the cover too. I don't think there should ever be back to back covers of any one branch of comics, whether it's superheros or not. There's more than enough variety in comics to not have to do that. As I said, it's my only real beef with the mag.

//Let’s see, first issue cover: superhero t-shirts; second issue cover: a superhero writer; third issue cover: spider-man mask and a comics reviewer whose recommendations are a 90% superheroes. //

It's bizarre to me that Fraction is now known as a 'superhero writer' despite the fact that the interview focused largely on his indie work. I mean, it makes sense -- the Marvel books outsell anything else he's done, so of course that's how most people will know him, but still... it's hard to wrap my brain around.

Just out of curiosity, Ben, have you read beyond the first issue? That's the only time we ever did the recreations you mention, and the magazine has changed pretty radically since then.

Your point is definitely taken about our cover subjects focusing on superheroes, but our interior coverage is ridiculously catholic, especially if you're bringing Wizard into the discussion for comparison.

Although a bit on the fluffy side, I do enjoy CF. As with any magazine, it's a mixed bag -- I really like seeing an artist or writer's workspace for instance, but the comic book cover/panel recreations with their friends are insanely silly and, no offense to the people involved but, a waste of space. I'd prefer to see more articles or interviews in that space.

I'm looking forward to seeing how the magazine grows and develops though. I have nothing but the best wishes for this magazine.

I only have one real bone to pick with CF. It's interesting to hear that they want to give even coverage to superhero, indie, and manga. Let's see, first issue cover: superhero t-shirts; second issue cover: a superhero writer; third issue cover: spider-man mask and a comics reviewer whose recommendations are a 90% superheroes. Hm, doesn't really seem all that even to me, maybe it's just me. Don't we get enough of this treatment from Wizard? How about having Julia Wertz or Umezu on the next cover? Then you can really claim to be giving fair coverage to all the different arms of the comic book industry.

[...] “It does get tricky. A lot of the comics coverage is so spoiler-based. It’s like, ‘Oh, something’s going to happen in this issue, but I can’t quite say what it is!’ That’s not at all the type of coverage we’re going for. I don’t care at all who’s going to die in this issue. That’s not really what our reader is reading Comic Foundry for. Because no matter what it is, we’re going to get beat online, so we don’t really try to do that stuff.” -Tim Leong on the challenges of planning a quarterly publication in a 24/7, Internet-based marketing-heavy industry [...]

Sonia Oback and I just did a cover for Wizard and it was a lot of fun to do, but we'd pay money for the chance to do one for CF (and we might have to :))

Talking to them briefly at a con, it's obvious that Tim and Laura are doing this for the pure love of comics and without any kind of agenda, and that's really a huge asset to the industry and medium as a whole.

When I first saw the "Sex and Comics" thing on the cover, I did a little eye roll, but after reading that interview, I feel that I have to go out and find all the issues. They sound smart, forward thinking, and like everything I want to be able to look forward to in the future of comics. I must learn more.

I love comic foundry (the magazine). I picked up my first issue while visiting Portland, got the second in Charlotte. I had to order the third, but our Atlanta stores now say they'll start carrying it.
Thanks for the interview! Good to hear the motivations behind it.
