Fred the Frown:
"[Marvel] ruined what made the Squadron Supreme unique and interesting (aside from the great writing)… which is that it’s not in any way connected the Marvel Universe"

That's actually not true. The Squadron Supreme debuted (twice, as they first appeared as the Squadron Sinister) during Roy Thomas's Avengers run and as part of an unoffical crossover with the JLA.

Were you just referring to the classic Gruenwald mini? That series picks up from the aftermath of another series's storyline involving the SS, and actually crossover with Captain America (the issue's even reprinted in the trade).

Nighthawk also exists in the Marvel, and is one of the longest running members of the Defenders.

Hyperion was the big bad of the original, long-running exiles plot from my understanding.

Just a few years ago, Nicieza referenced the team's first appearence by having a version of the SS as pawns of the Grandmaster, again, during an arc on Thunderbolts that crossed over with Civil War.

[...] The series overall is based around the themes of responsibility and destiny, and about the degree to which the Iron Fists meet both standards. It’s got some flaws, but it’s still enjoyable. The series sales seem to be fairly stable, so hopefully it’ll be around for a while. [...]

Regarding Brand New Day trade sales, I found the following on ICV2.com:

July 08 BND HC v.2 #57 2,213 copies $24.99

May 08 BND HC v.1 #37 2,628 copies $24.99

Looking over on BN.com, the various editions are not doing great business, with the highest ranking somewhere around 75,000 overall. The bestselling Spider-Man title is Ultimate Spider-Man and his Amazing Friends, Vol. 20, charting at 24496. Among Spider-Man titles, OMD Premiere v.1 ranks NINTH. Of course, titles chart higher when they are new, but from a level playing field among older titles, OMD is not moving. Apples and oranges, yes, because the other titles are cheaper trade paperbacks. OMB v.1 TP ships in October.

iron fist as a launching pad? I don't see it that way at all. I do wish it had continued longer with the original team.

> I just noticed something yesterday:
> Angel: Revelations is a Marvel Knights book, which means it is not in continuity. That might explain sales.

Probably part of it. Other parts probably include it being racked right beside the IDW Angel (as in vampire/Buffy spin-off) books rather than the X-books, and not having the Marvel (or even MK) logo anywhere on the book - it says Marvel in a non-standard font in a way which blends in. I doubt anyone who hadn't already preordered even noticed it.

Wraith, I think you're forgetting why Whedon is a celebrity in the first place - he's a really damn good writer. Personally, I picked up AXM because I liked the writing and the art. If the only reason why he was selling a lot of books was his name recognition, then sales would have dropped off quickly and kept falling. But they didn't, even when he was late with books. To me, that means he's selling because of quality, period.

It's "interesting", but these charts are virtually useless in terms of predicting publisher reactions, the ICV2 figures show broadly correct trends for some titles and completely incorrect trends for others (eg from 2006 to 2007 it proclaimed that Ultimate Spider-Man sales had gone down when in fact they'd gone up massively, according to the Statement of Ownership). As they only chart part of the Diamond market (and don't track other markets for comic books at all) you don't get the full picture from these things, and it's from the complete picture that the fates of these titles are decided.

A few quick points.

1. I predict that sales on UNCANNY X-MEN will drop right back down (or very close) to issue #499 numbers. The new storyline and the X-Men relocating to San Fran will NOT cause sales on this book to rise. MOST fans could care less.

2. Without the gimmicks, I highly doubt Ellis's first issue of AXM would have sold as well as it did. Let's be honest, the MAIN reason why AXM was selling really well under Wheedon was because Wheedon was a CELEBRITY cult favorite writer (as well as variant covers). Wheedon's run had "gimmick" written all over it. Ellis, despite being critically acclaimed and having a small cult following among comic fans, DOES NOT sell lot's of comics on his name alone.

3. I said it before, and I'll say it again, today's "high" comic sales are mainly due to hype.

I dropped Iron Fist after Fraction. I'm so tired of mid-level titles burning readers by being used as launching pads for hot creators.

A nitpick on Power Pack. (I notice it because my 5 year old and i have really have fun reading these together.) That 8K number for the start of the Day One mini always seemed wrong. There wasn't anything that set it apart from the other stories and I found it in the comic shop just fine. For the Skrull mini it was sold out in three places locally and I had to find it when I was in New York City. I think making it a Skrull connection really did double sales.

Things to watch:

Cable(=) I doubt that there will be a sales increase with No.6 because while it guest stars the X-Men, it also costs $1.00 more. If there will be an increase I think it comes at No.7 with the new X-Force and Bishop stuck in the present.

Daredevil(+) I think Lady Bullseye might spawn some interest in this title.

Ghost Rider(+) Danny Ketch and a big Mini Saga. Need I say more.

War Machine (-) Let's be honest. Once Secret Invasion is done and the relaunch complete, Unless Marvel has A: A super mini saga planned and promotes this like nothing you've seen before or B: Has a Superstar team on this and promotes this and delivers like nothing you've seen before I doubt this is going to do well.

Just like to say I look forward to your sales comparisons every month. It's always interesting to see how my comic buying habits compare with the rest of the nation's. I bet ASM gets a huge jump with the Romita Jr Venom stroyline.

I imagine that a lot of people who might normally buy an Angel/X-Men comic don't want anything to do with Pollina's art, which isn't a comment on quality so much as what a lot of fans are used to and expect.

A doubt: How are Spider-Man TPB sales doing? The three times a month schedule is a good incentive for people to wait for the trade, like I'm doing nowadays. It's possible that the series' trade sales may have improved with Brand New Day, making up for some of the regular book's losses.

Best,
Hunter (Pedro Bouça)

Figure the May 2007 circulation audit had Amazing Spidey at 12,975 subscriptions, Friendly Neighborhood Spidey at 2,305 subscriptions and Sensational Spidey at 1,381. On the high side for subscriptions, Ultimate Spidey had 14,890 subscriptions and Marvel Adventures Spidey had 27,395 subscriptions.

If those are the old benchmarks and subscriptions are way up, figure it's at least back to 20K. If its now the subscription leader at say, 30K, add in a few newstands sales and your total paid circulation would be over 100K/issue.

Those are the benchmarks you're playing with for subscriptions. Certainly, there's a massive subscription upside when you look at what the sundry titles were doing.

"62. SQUADRON SUPREME
07/04 Supreme Power #11 - 63,007

07/06 Squadron Supreme #5 - 46,029
07/07 —
=====
07/08 Squadron Supreme #1 - 35,583
                             6 mnth ( — )
                             1 year ( — )
                             2 year ( — )
                             3 year (-22.7%)
                             4 year ( — )
5 year (-43.5%)This is the SUPREME POWER version of the Squadron Supreme, now going into its third series. Volume one launched in August 2003 with sales of 96,161 and lasted eighteen issues, during which it dropped to 50K. Volume two launched in March 2006 with 61,625, and dropped to 42K by issue #7, when it abruptly ended despite two more issues having been solicited. That was followed by the ULTIMATE POWER miniseries, which ran horribly late, but was still selling 54K when it petered out last December.

So, after all that, the book relaunches at 35K - its lowest sales to date. This is, shall we say, somewhat discouraging."

Another example of Marvel screwing with a book written by J. Michael Straczynski, maybe?

I've read most, if not all, of the issues written by JMS, and I thought it was a great story. I'll read these new ones when they're collected, but I think that whole crossover with the Ultimate universe was the dumbest idea ever (even if it was JMS's idea) and ruined what made the Squadron Supreme unique and interesting (aside from the great writing)... which is that it's not in any way connected the Marvel Universe (this includes the Ultimate versions because it's still the Marvel Universe, it's just NU-Marvel).

I know I will like the new version a WHOLE LOT LESS now that I have to look at Nick Fury somewhere he DOES NOT BELONG.

"The Max imprint doesn’t do great business in the direct market, but Marvel are sticking with it"

Hell, that's because most of the books are at $3.99 for only 22 pages of material.

Wolverine fans are a lot cooler with wild changes in tone and setting than are folks who hold the FF dear. Add to that the way Millar totally screwed up writing the Four in CIVIL WAR and you have a ready-made situation for a negative Millar bump.

Might Wolverine's better ability to retain its Millar-bump be due to the fact that it stars Wolverine, and not the Fantastic Four?

Marvel has to be happy with those Iron Fist numbers. An increase in sales with the new creative team? I'm surprised, variant cover or not. Most people I talk to dropped the title like a hot potato after Fraction left.
