"I wish fanboyz would appreciate John Byrne’s genius like i do. No one reads his stuff anymore."

I think his star declined after everyone realized he was an ASS.

His ol' FF books are still good reading, though, don't get me wrong.

07/2008: Batman vs. Scarecrow — 6,379

yup, it was a reprint..

can anyone tell me WHY they bothered? It was an ok story, sure, but I'm not seeing the reasoning.

>They did a Creeper reboot miniseries after Infinite Crisis. It didn’t sell.

Thanks, I forgot about that mini-series. I was disappointed the tone was so "dark." I'm holding out for a more traditional version.

Also before I forget-

Was Batgirl originally billed as Six issue limited series?

Because according to the cover of issue 2 is not is a 6 issue mini.

But the cover to issue 1 does not make such a claim (or i can't find it)

Joe Walker,

You seem to think 'Somebody' is referring to this series.
http://www.comicbookdb.com/issue.php?ID=15595

Not the case. Check your dates as Somebody clearly says he/she is referring to the post Infinite Crisis series here:
http://www.comicbookdb.com/issue.php?ID=55663

If you're a Creeper fan and not familiar with this most recent series, maybe you should check out the TPB

My local shop is now filing Blue Beetle in with Tiny Titans, Scooby Doo, Superfriends, and Billy Batson. I don't know if that's a reference to the content (which is fairly kid-friendly) or a statement that I'm the only adult buying it.
Regardless, it almost has to be doing good newsstand sales, a la Johnny DC stuff, to have outlived Shadowpact, Checkmate, Atom, Aquaman: SOA, Hawkgirl, and the other OYL books.

That Creeper series had literally nothing to do with the original character. It was somebody's dreadful indie-wank rip-off of French silent movies.

> Hopefully, Final Crisis will result in re-launches for some “old favorites” like the Creeper and Deadman (I know they’re not appearing in FC).

They did a Creeper reboot miniseries after Infinite Crisis. It didn't sell.

[They also did a Deadman series under Vertigo around the same time, IIRC]

Funny you mention Deadman, Louis. I've been hoping to see him again in one way or another (the Brave and the Bold issue was nice) and remembered the upcoming Blackest Night event. I doubt Geoff is going to use the event to reintroduce him and I don't know if he can hold his own ongoing, but a miniseries would be a fun way to catch up with Boston Brand.

Cheers.

I failed to connect the dots in my earlier post. If you want to argue that Rogue's Revenge is a disappointment sales wise, you need to make a different comparision, possibly to the Infinte Crisis mini-series.

The book is selling 50% better than the last issue, Flash #200, the creative team did.

The book is selling double what the current Flash series is selling.

The book sold higher than any of Geoff's issues of the Flash.

The book sold better than Geoff's Action comics and comparable to the current Green Lantern. The book is retailing at $1.00 more than the current issues of these other series.

Now if Flash: Rebirth has these kind of numbers, then I'd panic.

Looks like Simon Dark, Blue Beetle, and Manhunter are now the lowest-selling "regular" DCU super-hero titles. Hopefully, trade paperback sales will keep them off the chopping block.

Hopefully, Final Crisis will result in re-launches for some "old favorites" like the Creeper and Deadman (I know they're not appearing in FC).

""we actually has a two face /hex sort of story pitched with the history of the dent family name involved and the bat office killed it at the time.""

Jim,

Any chance of them reconsidering? I love little bits of present DC lore making its way to the past of DC lore (I loved John Ostrander's THE KENTS of a decade back).
If such a story makes it out, I'll say more things like, "JONAH HEX #35 was a great book. I wish we had more stories like it."
Well, I'll say such things anyways- but maybe I won't say them here. As much. And by as much, I mean, every day instead of every couple of hours.
Do not risk my wrath.

"What the three publishing events have in common is that they’re stories centered on specific characters, rather than celebrations of the DC Universe as an end in itself. There may be a lesson in that."

Couldn't have put it better myself. The books need to be working on their own, not because Earth-23 is exploding. It's already been discussed, however, so I'll stop there.

Cheers.

"Genius, Marvel tells stories about their characters not their multiple universes."

You're backpedaling. Marvel's string of events since House of M have all been sold on the basis of shared universe-wide conflict. Whether alternate universes (like, I dunno, House of M) are involved or not is irrelevant.

At best your argument is that fans want to read about characters, with the characters preferably being all in one book and a part of the same story and plot.

In any case, you're made an incorrect assessment and you're covering with semantics.

I don't think Infinite Crisis was a failure, by any means. Nor did many fans consider it a let down. Most I've talked to enjoyed it far more than Civil War, which may have sold better-but had a LOT of fans scratching their heads about the heroes acting out of character.

I have to say this: DC had marketed Batman R.I.P. well. I for one had no desire to read Morrison take on Batman. Some how they managed to get people to pick this up. Had they actually put forth the same effort promoting Blue Beetle as with this book, they could have had a hit on their hands. To me, it's almost if Batman/Batbooks are spead out too thin. Many who read Nightwing and/or Robin probably doesn't read Batman or Detective. Some people actually preffered Detective over what Morrison was doing in Batman. Marvels experiment with A single Spider-Man book might being watched by DC. After all in the 80's and 90's they did have a "continuity" between the Superman books and the Batman books.

And it's pretty clear Mr. Frisch analysis has something to be desired. For example- Batgirl book actually does slightly better than when it was canceled- and yet it's considered a failure? To be sure: It's written by a writer who's considered a hack among her loyal followers. I suspect there will be a drastic drop off in the book... It isn't because they don't like the character-it's because the writer really hasn't improved.

With the Final Crisis crossovers: Is it possible that there is some backlash at DC about these "extra" books? When it was originally pitched: DC claimed that there would be no crossover issues to buy. Then they added a book or two. The next thing we know there are several books added to list. Most people I know aren't too thrilled with Final Crisis...however Some are rabid about it. I'm not a Morrison fan, I'm meh on the subject.

As for Rouges Revenge: Considering that the story does not have any appearance of the Flashs -I'd say it is doing damn well. (Well Jay but in a cameo) What you are seeing is how big of a draw that Goeff Johns is as a writer.

And FC: Requium was a nice issue- but the attraction was the JLA seeing one of their people off...for now. Not bad numbers for a B lister actually.

"Which explains the sales of Secret Invasion, World War Hulk, Civil War, 52, Infinite Crisis, Countdown to Infinite Crisis, House of M, and Identity Crisis so goddamn well."

Genius, Marvel tells stories about their characters not their multiple universes. And when they do have crossovers like SI, WWH and Civil War, those crossovers are about the characters themselves, not about keeping track of various versions over an infinite number of universes. Which is why Marvel crossovers outsell DC crossovers each and every time.

Identity Crisis wasn't about a multiple universe either. And while Infinite Crisis was, it was considered a huge letdown by many and the stink of it still lives on in DC today.

Which may explain a lot of DC's poor sales.

I too have to disagree with Final Crisis:REQUIEM being a disappointment selling at 3.99, especially when directly under it we have Detective Comics at 2.99 and featuring a first string character is a "monster hit" with 2,000 less units and $80,000 less in retail sales. Somehow, the numbers and the comments don't jive.

I have to disagree with the idea that Final Crisis: REQUIEM under-performed at 74K. Given that it was 1) a tier two character story with 2) a plot line that readers pretty much already knew, I would think 74K is a actually a really good number. It outsold Trinity even though that title features DC's top three characters EVER, and the bonus of an evolving plot line. I would think DC has to be pleased.

we actually has a two face /hex sort of story pitched with the history of the dent family name involved and the bat office killed it at the time.

the sales spike for hex with the darwyn issue would have been better but dc sold out of the extra copies and didnt go back to print on it...so the only way to get it is to get the upcoming trade probably out next year.

I thank everyone who gave it a try .

AERose--I read it as him saying that spin-offs sell when they're part of a character based cross-over, which the Sinestro Corps/RIP thing seems to prove, whereas the Universe based cross-over doesn't seem to have the same major impact on the specifically cross-over based book--like 52 not pushing 52: Crime Bible, or all of those Countdown spin-offs. I don't think a guy who reads sales charts is trying to say that Batman RIP spin-offs outsell Civil War properly--just that they beat Civil War: What Ben Reilly Was Doing.
