Paul, your description of the Invincible Iron Man relaunch as "fairly successful" is baffling. After a successful movie, with the mild star power of Fraction and Larocca, the book hasn't even filled a six-issue tpb yet without dropping below 60k. Looks pretty bad to me. But you've been doing this longer, maybe I've much to learn.

Thanks, JD. Quite consistent indeed. Interesting to see how Suadade, Annual #2 line up (not to mention Original Sin, which - quite arguably - could fit into that column as well).

For those who care : a synthesis of the random Wolverine one-shots for the last year or so :

10/07 Annual #1 - Deathsong - 55,041
12/07 Firebreak - 37,218
05/08 Amazing Immortal - 32,280
06/08 Dangerous Game - 31,940
08/08 Killing Made Simple - 33,645

Except for the annual, that's quite consistent.

I should probably read the comments more often to see if this has been suggested in the past, but... what about grouping the various Wolverine one-shots together to get maybe some historical perspective on their performance? They are not connected to each other by content or creative team, sure, but it just seems practical: to me, the nigh-monthly frequency of the releases seriously constitutes a third Wolverine ongoing, in practice if not in title. Naturally, there would be an added caveat that the numbers are (likely) unrelated from month to month based on creative team and/or solicited content, but it would still be very interesting to see the trends in ordering over time. Thoughts?

Ultimate Fantastic Four actually is getting cancelled as one of Jeph Loeb's Heroes buddies is finishing the book up. It will presumably be relaunched soon enough though.

Funny to see that Fantastic Four was missing last month after Millar & Hitch telling us all that they were miles ahead and everything would ship on time, I made the right call by dropping it and not giving them the benefit after the Ultimates delays.

Just a thought: doesn't price factor into these numbers at all? A book that sells 25,000 at $2.99 produces approximately the same dollar amount as a book that sells 18,734 copies at $3.99. By that scale, something like the X-Factor one shots, which are low in actual copies ordered, may bring in equivalent or even better money than the parent title.

Oh and I dropped Punisher War Zone this month, fairly dreadful.

New Punisher team exceeded my expectations quality-wise on Punisher #61.

I am trimming some of the lower end stuff off my pull list these days. I am not in any particular financial trouble at the moment, but figure it's wise to be at least a little smarter. Stuff like PWZ, the Foolkiller Mini, Detective Comics, etc.. that were the "last books I read" from my pile are getting cut. I have a search set up on eBay, once a year I'll go there and swoop up a 10 or so issue run for cents on the dollar...

The Layla Miller one shot was $3.99, so there's that extra dollar bonus for Marvel. While I had wondered what was happening with her, I didn't find the one shot all that "appetizing" for me.

Peter David might like doing these one issue looks into characters. In the main X-Factor he's usually (successfully) juggling several storylines at once. Trying to work something like the Layla Miller storyline, where she's thrown into the future, might not really be appropriate.

"Old Man Logan" is being touted as actually being *in* continuity, with some (unknown at this point) connection to both Marvel 1985 and Millar's Fantastic Four run.

To all those people buying additional copies of comics because they feature regular characters depicted as monkeys on the cover: you're buying additional copies of comics because they feature regular characters depicted as monkeys on the cover.

" So… genuinely levelling out? Unusual level of interest in apes? Who can tell?"

"...the sales boost is presumably thanks to Frank Cho’s variant monkey cover."
"Another monkey cover."
"...this time also featuring a variant cover with a monkey."
"Another monkey variant."

To repeat the query of the Barenakedladies, haven't you always wanted a monkey?

Regarding AD revenues....not to worry, the armed services look upon comic readers as an abundant source of fresh meat. And we'll still have those homoerotic Ballpark Frank ads every summer.

BLACK PANTHER is apparently being relaunched with a new series, with Reggie Hudlin remaining as writer. The issue that just shipped, #41 IIRC, is the final issue.

NEW EXILES has shed 10K since Claremont took over. Unfortunate, since the book sold consistently in the 30K range for a good 2-3 years before him.

Hi, Paul. Contrary to your write-up, #60 is Garth Ennis' last PUNISHER MAX issue for the foreseeable future. #61 is, in fact, the new team's first issue. Cheers!

And, for Hulk & Herc, #112 should definitely be put in with the Hercules issues (it's part one of a five-issue story), and there's a strong case that #106-111 should be too (they barely feature Hulk, and were TPBed as WWH: Incredible Herc - the story from Planet Hulk continued into the main WWH mini).

I think the Hulk comparisons should go up to Incredible Hulk #105, then WWH: World Breaker, then WWH #1-5, then Hulk #1-...

> This is a sequel to Joe Quesada and Josh Middleton’s largely-forgotten NYX series, which took forever to ship eight issues before the project was abandoned.

Seven issues, IIRC.

> Issue #568 has a variant cover, and there’s also a sketch variant lurking at number 231 on the charts. The sales above are cumulative.

Actually, #568 had four covers. #569 had two.
