Monday, October 27
Philadelphia, PA, 5:30 PM - Charles Burns lecture and Life in Boxes exhibition at U. Penn
The University of Pennsylvania opens a new exhibition of comic art and artifacts drawn from the collection of more than 5,000 books and 20,000 comics recently donated by alumnus Steve Rothman. The opening reception will be preceded by a lecture from award-winning cartoonist Charles Burns (BLACK HOLE).

Toronto, ON, 5 PM - 7 PM - Shaun Tan at The Beguiling
Australian illustrator Shaun Tan (THE ARRIVAL) heads to Canada for a signing of his new wordless graphic novel TALES FROM OUTER SUBURBIA at Toronto retailer The Beguiling.

Montreal, QC, 7:30 PM - Marc Bell at Librairie Drawn And Quarterly
At this vernissage, featuring collaborations from Andrew Dick, Seth Scriver and Matthew Thurber, Marc Bell will launch his new book ILLUSZTRAIJUNS FOR BRAIN POLICE, which is limited to 150 copies and will only be available at Librairie Drawn And Quarterly.

New York, NY, 8 PM - The Comic Book Club at The People’s Improv Theatre
New York’s weekly live comic book talk show returns for another session at The PIT, with hosts Justin Typer, Pete LaPage and Alex Zalben joined by comics industry pros from across the map. Admission is $5.

Dearborn, MI, 4 PM - 8 PM - Rob Worley at Green Brain Comics
Rob Worley , writer of THE REVENANT, will be signing the graphic novel collection of the series, which features art by Mat Santolouco.

New York, NY, 6 - 10 PM - THE NIGHTMARE FACTORY and BATTLEFIELDS signings at Jim Hanley’s Universe
Writers Stuart Moore and Joe Harris and artist Bill Sienkiewicz will be signing copies of THE NIGHTMARE FACTORY, Volume 2, which features adaptions of the works of horror writer Thomas Liogotti from 6 - 8 PM. Then, from 8 - 10 PM, writer Garth Ennis and artist Russ Braun will be signing their new book BATTLEFIELDS.

Chicago, IL, 5 PM - 8 PM - Jeff Balke at Graham Cracker Comics
Artist and colorist Jeff Balke (CLUB VAMPIRE) will be signing books, including the Arcana Studios horror anthology Velvet Rope at Graham Cracker Comics.

New York, NY, 10 AM - 5 PM - MAD Magazine exhibition at MoCCA
A one day only exhibition of classic MAD Magazine artwork will be on display at New York’s Museum of Comic and Cartoon Art. All of the 36 pieces feature mascot Alfred E. Neuman, and can be see at Heritage Auction’s website, where they are currently up for bidding.

Rochester, NY, 7:30 PM - Art Spiegelman at the Rochester Jewish Book Festival
Legendary cartoonist Art Spiegelman will be speaking about his new book BREAKDOWNS at the Jewish Community Center of Greater Rochester as part of the city’s Jewish Book Festival.

New York, NY, 6:30 PM - McNally Jackson’s Literary Halloween Party
McNally Jackson Books hosts their second annual Halloween party featuring refreshments, a literary costume contest, and lots of signings and book readings. Stuart Moore, Joe Harris and Bill Sienkiewicz will be there to sign copies of THE NIGHTMARE FACTORY Volume 2, and Moore will read from his upcoming dark fantasy novel BREUCKELEN. Free and open to the public.

San Francisco, CA - Alternative Press Expo 2008
APE moves to the fall this year, but remains in its longtime home, San Francisco’s Concourse. Special guests include Jessica Abel (LA PERDITA), Megan Kelso (THE SQUIRREL MOTHER) and Chris Ware (ACME NOVELTY LIBRARY). Admission is $10 for one day, or $15 for both days, and if you’ve kept your badge from San Diego this year, you can use it to get in for free.
San Francisco, CA - APE Party at the Cartoon Art Museum
On Saturday, from 8 PM - 11 PM, The Cartoon Art Museum hosts a special APE party commemorating the end of their Keith Knight art exhibition, and featuring readings from Jesse Reklaw (THE NIGHT OF YOUR LIFE), Trevor Alixopulos (THE HOT BREATH OF WAR), Hellen Jo, Olga Volozova, David King and Julia Wertz. Admission is on a sliding donation scale, from $2 to $20.
San Francisco, CA - APE Aftermath at Isotope
Bay-Area Retailer Isotope Comics will be hosting an after-party each night of APE. On Saturday, Top Shelf Press hosts a happy hour and a live art jam with Nate Powell (SWALLOW ME WHOLE) and Josh W. Cotter (SKYSCRAPER OF THE MIDWEST), followed by a ceremony for the winner of the Isotope Award for Excellence in Mini-Comics at 10 pm.
On Saturday, Dame Darcy will celebrate the launch of her new book GASOLINE with a live banjo performance on Isotope’s stage.

On Wednesday, October 29, I’ll be making a presentation on Age of Bronze, my ongoing comic book series retelling the Trojan War story, at the San Bernardino Public Library in San Bernardino, CA. Time: 6:30 pm. Free admission. Book signing afterward.

My new company, Antix Press, will be at APE (table 507). We’re premiering our first trade Dr. Grave: The Unholy Twelve, which features a cover by Guy Davis. I’ll be making a appearance at APE for the first time in three years with the first chapter in my four act mini-series, Deposit Man: Playgod along with cover artist Kori Thompson ( who paints mean looking skateboards ). Preview of the second issue will be available at the table; provided that Oliver gets done lettering up the new pages and making them look pretty.
I don’t know my table number. You’ll have to look it up under Landescape Productions.
Expect me to crash many parties and make a total ass of myself - which isn’t very difficult to do, when you go by the name of Cary Coatney these days. The tradition continues.
