just FYI… The picture is (to the best of my knowledge) is a gorilla. A Gorilla is not a monkey. A good rule of thumb is Monkeys have tails. Gorillas are apes.

Ahem… apes are not monkeys. Calling an ape a “monkey” is like calling a hominid a “hairless ape”. It implies lower intelligence and ability.
(I once supervised a bullpen of 100 chimpanzees banging away at workstations. The first lesson we learned was to refer to them only as “chimpanzees”, not as “chimps” or “monkeys”. We were then shown a video of an insulted chimpanzee attacking a side of beef. I had a nice salad for lunch that day, and found a less stressful job in retail a few months later.)

Don’t you dare re-title this post Heidi. I want to see how many people “monkey” pile you for this.

[…] Sometimes I worry the next generation won’t know the difference between monkeys and apes: Heidi MacDonald at PW Beat doesn’t help. (But she was pointing readers to some cool Hal Foster Tarzan images, so I guess I’ll forgive her. This time.) […]

Look guys. I know the difference between apes and monkeys. I know the difference between greater apes (chimps, bonobos, orangutans and goriallas) and lesser apes (gibbons and siamangs.) I know the difference between baboons, macasques and mandrills, Old World monkeys and New World monkeys, marmosets and tamarins and capuchins, aye-ayes, lemurs, sifakas, indris, guenons and uakaris and sakis.
But yelling “Apes!” is not as funny as yelling “Monkeys!” and this just how it is.
