OF COURSE it was the Belkin router! After an hour or so spent with the nice Belkin helpdesk people, one of whom told me to call Apple, I fiddled with the password preferences and called another tech and got it solved.

Basically, every time I have had a problem getting a Mac/PC airport/laptop combo to work -- either way -- it comes down to some kind of password problem. One is in ascii the other in hex, or something like that. I googled this problem and found endless frustrating references to resetting DHCP settings, ISP verification and other bollocks. Usually it's much simpler than that.

Methinks it's the Belkin router that's at fault, not the Mac! See if there's an updated driver on Belkin's website Heidi - they might have issued one since the last Apple OS update.

Hope the power comes back on soon. Merry Xmas to Maine!

Merry Christmas to the Beat from the Blogweirdo.

Like every year, I hope to find on X-Mas morning my beloved Ms. Mac wrapped up in red ribbons under my tree. (Like my eMac was a few years back.)

But hey, you're in Yorkie and I'm in Cali, and probably neither of us are into bondage, anyway.

Have a cool one, Ace. (But not too many!)

All I gotta say is that somebody in my family better pony up with a Batman Complete Animated Series DVD box set under my tree tomorrow morning, pronto - or all my nieces and nephews are going to find a mean collection of reindeer lawn cigars in their Christmas stockings.

I can't find the blasted thing anywhere.

Happy Holidays everyone - can't say that 2008 has been the best of years for me.

IBM may have failed, but the PC is the dominant operating system. (Apple surrendered with the implementation of Power PC and Bootcamp.) Had Apple licensed its hardware to a select few manufacturers, it could have capitalized on the children of the `80s (I learned BASIC on an Apple ][ with 64K) who were familiar with the company while capitalizing on the creative community who flocked to the Macintosh.

But while Macs and PCs battle it out, Google is slowly winning market share with its Open Source cellphones. That's where the future lies. I don't have any preference, whichever works best for what I need to do.

"Today, we celebrate the first glorious anniversary of the Information Purification Directives. We have created, for the first time in all history, a garden of pure ideology. Where each worker may bloom secure from the pests of contradictory and confusing truths. Our Unification of Thoughts is more powerful a weapon than any fleet or army on earth. We are one people, with one will, one resolve, one cause. Our enemies shall talk themselves to death and we will bury them with their own confusion. We shall prevail!"

Heidi, this sort of Mac vs PC hatemongering is taking us down the road to Hutu/Tutsi-ville. We Mac people need to make an effort to keep our inherent superiority quietly to ourselves.

As the Kinks said, "Merry Christmas! Give us some money!" :) It's time to get off line, and spend some time with live human beings who love us. My best to all of you, who I am so blessed to be able to talk with, so often. We really are a lucky sort, to have these wonderful subjects to address, and Uncle Heidi to bring them up. Thank you.

If you consider 1/5 of US home-use sales a "niche", that's up to you. But a quick look at Apple's balance sheets shows that its computer division is doing quite well.

(And where exactly can I buy a Mini-ITX dual-core PC (no monitor) for only $99? :) )

Apple has been very successful selling gadgets like iPods and iPhones. As a computer platform, they're a niche market, and an elite club that you join by paying $500 extra for your computer. Most of us can't afford that.

Apple "might have been more successful"? Than what? The only companies that sell more computers in the U.S. are HP and Dell. Meanwhile, the company that did what you suggest (IBM) isn't even in the personal computer business anymore. Approve of it or not, Apple's strategy (especially over the last decade) has been very successful.

Well, I'm using the 'rent's cable modem, although the computer is rather slow...

As for diversity, well, if Apple hadn't been so Scrooge-like with licensing affordable alternatives, then they might have been more successful. Of course, if business leaders were visionary, we'd all be using Xerox Star computers right now and driving Ford Volkswagens.
