Micheal - I've never heard anything that Pixar has released be regarded as cartoons - CGI animation, yes - but cartoon, no. I'd catagorize Cat Shite' One as CGI animation - but not anime.

But you say potato and I'd say potatoe; etc.

Whoop. Take it back. He really is tossing his weapon. Most of what I just said still applies, but the silly Hollywood thing is just that the rifle isn't slung.

michael: I wonder if this has a political statement or it’s more for pure entertainment? And it seems like Black Hawk Down with some silly Hollywood conventions.

I don't recall the manga having many political statements as such. It's sympathies were mostly with the boots (or big bunny feet, as the case may be) on the ground and their day-to-day survival. I can't say I was too impressed with it, although that might be because the comparisons to Maus made me walk in with wildly unrealistic expectations. It struck me as a competent, reasonably well-done war comic that did its homework, but the rabbits/cats thing struck me as just a gimmick. It really meant something in Maus.

Really? Throwing away your weapon? Who enters a battle with no spare ammo. Pure silliness.

He's not throwing away his weapon. His rifle has a sling, so he's just dropping it out of the way. He's gone empty or misfired and went for his pistol rather than wasting the time to reload since the bad guy is right in front of him and he has no cover. If you know what you're doing, it's faster and is taught as standard tactics to soldiers who carry sidearms regularly. At that range, the pistol might also be more effective, since 5.56mm rifle rounds can overpenetrate a target that close, meaning the enemy may not even realize he's been shot unless you get lucky and hit something extremely vital.

I wonder if this has a political statement or it's more for pure entertainment? And it seems like Black Hawk Down with some silly Hollywood conventions.

Originally published in the U.S. in 2004, Apocalypse Meow was released in 3 volumes by ADV. This is excellent, beautifully illustrated and thoughtful manga that was overlooked wihen it was first published. The manga also offered a prose history of the Vietnam war and a short discussion of tactics and weapons. It was entertaining, informative and often moving. Check out the full review and support the making of the Cat Chit One anime!!! Check out PW's full review. http://tinyurl.com/cnzx8p
