NYCC: PROJECT HAIRCUT!

04/16/08

Comic News Insider’s Jimmy Aquino is shearing his locks for a good cause:

The New York Comic-Con (NYCC) is coming on April 18th-20th at the Jacob Javitts Center. It’s a big nerdy convention that will be full of comic book folk and celebrities. CNI will again have a big booth in the Podcast Arena doing live interviews, autograph signings, a charity raffle and more. And…I’ve decided to do the big cut as a charity and fundraiser event! The cut hair itself will go to LOCKS OF LOVE. And here’s where I need your help. I’m asking for a flat fee pledge of any dollar amount. $1, 5, 10, 20, a gajillion..whatever you want! We will send money off to LOCKS OF LOVE along with the hair and the rest will be used as a fundraiser for CNI to help cover expenses. I’m still working out details, but I may possibly have a celeb do the actual snip! Who knows? Maybe we’ll sing a tune. Stay tuned!

The haircut will take place on Saturday, April 19th at the CNI booth. Time is approximate, but will happen sometime between 1:00-1:30 p.m. Following the cut, as I’ve not known any other hairstyle for 20 years, a stylist will be on hand to work the new hair over. Feel free to come watch and suggest a style. Mohawk? Mullet? Bob? Heck, I wont even know until she’s done!

NYCC hits new benchmark!

04/15/08

Well, it’s official! 3 out of 4 people we surveyed today agree that New York Comic-Con has now become a midi-San Diego in terms of stress and anxiety!

In fact it reached a plateau previously only hit by SDCC by inspiring anxiety dreams for The Beat days beforehand! Rock and roll! Lock and load! Hit the deck! Hit the drugs!

Our stiff neck is under control thanks to massive amounts of Aleve, but any more pain and we’re going straight to the Valium.

We’ll have more NYCC round up news tomorrow. We can tell from our email and IMs that everyone out there is just as stressed as we are. But it will be worth it in the end, right?

You cannot escape New York Comic-Con

04/14/08

New York Comic-Con is looking at the end of the week, and to celebrate the occasion The Beat has a stiff neck, doubtless touched off by the stress. We’re maing a stress pizza here, folks; nay a veritable stress bouillabaisse. Luckily, or unluckily, every other person we know in New York vagely involved in comcis is having the same stress pizza. So it’s a stress pizza with EVERYTHING, including anchovies.

We’ll be giving tomorrow’s Beat over to our world famous, non-stop New York Comic-Con preview. If you have a signing schedule posted somewhere we can link to, post it in the comments or in an email. We’ll round ‘em all up. We’re also assembling our world famous Party Poop page so send us links to that, too.

Come Join Intern Alley

04/10/08

Do YOU want to join the most dynamic team in comics? Do YOU want to win fame, fortune, glory and free copies of BLEACH? Do YOU want to storm the shores of Toontown and hear the lamentation of the women while smelling bacon in the morning?

Well then, we may just have the opportunity for you!

Both the PW Comics Dept. and The Beat are looking for interns!

The PW Comics Dept. opening is for someone with a journalism background. Hours are extremely flexible. Knowledge of Microsoft Office, spread sheets etc necessary. Ability to open boxes, affix labels and look up pub dates on Amazon a plus. This is a non-paying position but a great opportunity to get into the ground level of publishing and journalism not to mention comics. Writing ability will be taken into consideration and there will be plenty of opportunities for writing, reviewing or whatever you want to do.

The Beat position is a virtual one, and will involve some coding, some posting, some proofreading, adding sidebar links, and so on. Again, non paying, but a great opportunity to get in on the first floor of big league blogging and also much room for growth. Local candidates will also be considered with even more opportunities for non paying grunt work that will make you feel extremely good about yourself. Candidates should be able to master “That Barton Fink feeling.”

If you are attending New York Comic-Con, come drop off your resume at the Publishers Weekly booth, #1164. We will NOT be conducting interviews at the show. However we will be collecting resumes. Please indicate which position you are interested in: if the PW position direct the resume to the attention of Calvin Reid. If the Beat position, to the attention of Heidi MacDonald.

If you wish to apply via email, send a note to my email. I will forward appropriate responses to Calvin.

That’s it — adventure awaits!

“Possibly the most ridiculous panel description ever”

04/10/08

Jenna-Jameson-Strip-Cake-10
Laura Hudson spots a real howler from the NYCC panel descriptions:

Friday
7:00 PM-8:00 PM
1E15
Girls Who Kick Ass
How do the ladies creating comics do it? They’re constantly blowing us
away with the most outrageous and provocative titles. Jenna Jameson
(Shadow Hunter), Colleen Doran (Distant Soil, Reign of the Zodiac),
Amanda Connor (Birds of Prey, Painkiller Jane, Lois Lane ), Louise
Simonson (New Mutants, X-Factor, Superman) and special guests reveal
why they know what Fan-Boys want.

It’s nice to know that after a lifetime of fighting to be taken seriously, you can still be lumped in with a former porn star who once read a comic book as an equal.

PackageSeriously, this is why “women’s panels” suck are a dated, useless idea whose time has come…and gone. I would love to hear Colleen Doran’s thoughts on art history and freelancing…Amanda Connor’s ideas on design and the current state of superheroes…Louise Simonson’s unsurpassed viewpoint on storytelling and creating lasting characters…and sure, what the hell, even Jenna Jameson’s ideas on why celebrities are flocking to comics to get their next optionable property. But when all these people are grouped together solely on the basis of gender it’s dumb, patronizing and, frankly, sexist. Will we soon be seeing a “Men in Comics” panel featuring Gary Groth, Jose Luis Garcia Lopez, DJ Coffman, Bill Black and Nicolas Cage?
