NYCC: Tor.Com

02/4/09

Tor.com just announced a pretty impressive line-up of SF-themed webcomics, and they’ll be showing it all off at a panel on Saturday:Tor.com will be holding a panel, moderated by Pablo Defendini, and attended by Irene Gallo, Patrick Nielsen Hayden and Dan Goldman.

Jumping in Headfirst: Tor.com and the role of traditional publishers in today’s new media economy
Saturday, Feb 7
4:00 PM – 5:00 PM
Room 1A18

Decription: As the future rapidly becomes the present, traditional dead-tree publishers have two choices: either get with the program or get out of the way. But the digital space rewrites the rules of the game for any industry based on IP (intellectual property).

Speculative Fiction publishers, already having an eye on the future by default, are in a unique position to lead the charge away from traditional publishing models and into uncharted territory. Come listen to staff and friends of Tor.com as they explain the method to their madness in putting together the science-fiction and fantasy site that gives away free (as in beer) stories, comics, and novels; followed by a Q&A session divided into two parts: first part with questions culled from Tor.com members in advance, second part with questions from the audience.

Topics to Discuss: Free content online, eBooks, digital delivery of comics, digital rights management. Building an online community as a platform on which to promote authors’ work.

Rich Faber writes that he’ll be at the show and selling many items (like the print above) to raise money to pay continued expenses for his wife’s cancer treatment:

Now, as for the title of the post, the NYCC is this coming weekend, from February 6-8th, and I will be there. Thanks to the generosity of my colleagues at Kids Love Comics, I will have a table with them at booth #1930, and will be selling all of my various wares, to help raise money for my wife’s medical bills, as well as a lot of other related expenses we’ve been incurring. My hope is to come up with enough to keep things stable for another month or two, and I’m hoping you guys that will be there can help. Below are pics of most of the things I’ll have for sale. I hope you’ll drop by to see me, and maybe pick up a little something. In addition to what I’m showing here, I’ll have 15 years of original comics art for sale, including Green Lantern, Steel, Titans, and many others. I will also probably be doing some character head shot sketches, for those interested. The main goal is to raise money, so I’ll be there for the entire weekend, and try to stay at the table as much as possible, so I am able meet as many of you as I can. Please stop by to say hi. Thanks!

Reed moves NYCC to fall, announces new Chicago show

02/2/09

Making official two rumors that had been floating freely for a while now, Reed Exhibitions announced that the NYCC will be moving to a permanent early October date starting in 2010, and will begin a new Chicago show, called the Chicago Comic & Entertainment Expo, starting in April 2010.

The new New York dates conflict most closely with indie themes shows SPX, held in October in Bethesda, MD, and APE, held in SF in November, as well as the Baltimore Comic-Con and Reed’s own New York Anime Fest, which was held in September of last year.

The Chicago show is planned as a “downtown” show which will take advantage of Chicago’s many amenities and large pop culture audience.

Full PR below:

Reed Exhibitions has today announced the launch of Chicago Comic & Entertainment Expo (C2E2) which will take place April 16 – 18, 2010 at McCormick Place in downtown Chicago. The new show will be structured in the spirit of New York Comic Con (NYCC) which was launched by Reed Exhibitions in 2006 and saw attendance grow from 33,000 in its first year to 67,000 in 2008, making it the fastest growing comic and pop culture event in the U.S. Chicago Comic & Entertainment Expo comes in response to significant customer demand. Reed officials note that customers of New York Comic Con have frequently and repeatedly asked Reed Exhibitions to bring a major pop culture event to downtown Chicago.

“We are delivering this event for the industry and for the fans,” notes Lance Fensterman, who is Vice President and Show Manager for NYCC and who will also be overseeing C2E2. “We have heard their wishes and we are thrilled to bring what we hope will be another massive comic and pop culture event, in the spirit of New York Comic Con, to an eager audience in Chicago and the entire Midwest. With April dates in place for Chicago, this has also provided us with a perfect opportunity to balance the sequence of our events by moving New York Comic to permanent dates in the fall.”

This year’s New York Comic Con is scheduled to take place February 6 – 8 at the Jacob K. Javits Center. The next New York Comic Con will take place October 8 – 10, 2010. Officials confirm that the October time for New York Comic Con is sustainable and will be permanent to avoid shifting dates from year to year. Most importantly, the new dates will afford substantial growth opportunity within the Javits facility itself.

As for C2E2, show organizers are planning a major launch. “We are aiming big,” continues Fensterman. “We plan to apply everything we have learned in launching and building New York Comic Con to our Chicago event and we intend for it to be a major attraction right out the gate. Of course, this not only means providing a customer friendly atmosphere but also providing dynamic programming that boasts top talent from across the pop culture spectrum, including artists, creators and celebrities from Hollywood, TV, comics, books, video games, toys, Anime, Manga and all other applicable aspects of the popular arts. But, most importantly, we will also seek to make adjustments so that our show reflects the essence of Chicago. This will be critically important. The city itself will form an important part of our identity.”

Convention officials note that in addition to industry support for a C2E2, there has also been widespread agreement that a balanced con calendar is essential. This was an important consideration as Reed Exhibitions looked to implement its plan. “The major players in the various pop culture industries are behind us,” states Fensterman. “We are pleased with the new timeline and see Chicago as anchoring the spring con calendar and New York Comic Con as ending the con calendar with a major exclamation point.”

“The expansion of Reed’s Comic Convention schedule to include a Chicago show is very exciting news,” says Marvel’s Vice President of Merchandising & Communications Michael Pasciullo. “They have proven in just four short years through the success of the New York Comic Convention that Reed can bring together comics, TV, and film in new and exciting ways for both the industry and fans alike. Marvel is looking forward to being part of their new Midwest experience.”

“We’re pleased to be building on the success Reed has had with the New York Comic Con and looking forward to their adding a Chicago show to their schedule,” notes DC Comics President Paul Levitz. “Our Midwest fans have a great history of celebrating comics at conventions, and we hope this will be the beginning of a memorable run of events for them.”

Reed officials note that their ability to confidently launch C2E2 is an indication of how deeply embedded all aspects of pop culture have become in our society. In addition to New York Comic Con, Reed Exhibitions launched the New York Anime Festival in 2007 and it entered a strategic partnership with Penny Arcade (PAX) in 2008. Reed Exhibitions will be working closely with PAX on the launch of PAX East in Boston in 2010. “The emergence and growth of the pop culture segment of our business has been huge,” Fensterman concludes. “We are absolutely dedicated to this community and are thrilled to be delivering our customers what they have told us they need.’ The show will have a web site that can be found at www.chicagocomicandentertainmentexpo.com

New York Comic-Con planning — announcements wanted!

01/29/09

Publishers, artists, party planners — send us your info!

We’ll be covering New York Comic-Con (Feb 6-8 at the Javits in NYC) all next week, but in the run-up to war, we’ll be previewing booth plans, guests, and surprises. And parties…don’t forget the parties.

Email us at the usual place…and if you put NYCC somewhere in the email, Gmail will magically sort it into a place where we can FIND it.

Nice, right?

This is gonna be fun.

BTW: The forecast for next week calls for temps in the 30s. Not too bad, considering it IS the winter. But still, bundle up!

Exhausted by idea of New York Comic-Con? Go here

01/14/09

If you’re like The Beat and everyone else in the comics industry, the haze from the food and/or other substances induced hangover of the holidays has lifted just in time to see New York Comic-Con hurtling at you like a runaway freight train, resulting in a Wile E. Coyote-like eyeball explosion, complete with bloodshot irises. Perhaps this widget will help. It’s a planner for the show — you can log in and make a list of all the booths you wish to go to and even print it out. HOT DOG, we used to have to use a pencil and paper for that kind of thing.

NB: There’s an exhibitor map that shows many booths as being available. We quizzed show runner Lance Fensterman about this and he says it is due to an administrative procedure. For instance, Marvel isn’t listed as an exhibitor but will be at the show.

NYCC panel lineup announced

01/8/09

New York Comic-Con has announced its programming for the Feb 6-8 show. There’s lots to like, with a lot of diversity and variety among the topics. The major film and TV programming will be unveiled closer to the show date. We’re scheduled for two panels:

The Beat Presents The Art of Storytelling
Sunday 11:15 AM - 12:15 PM 1A06
As comics have become a more influential part of pop culture, their stories and characters are known more widely than ever. Step inside the minds of some of the comic biz’s best storytellers to find out how they approach their craft and shape their visions to create their best known works. Moderated by Heidi MacDonald, with Jim Lee, Marv Wolfman, and more.

Lilly Renee Phillips Spotlight
Sunday 1:45 PM-2:45 PM
Lily Renee Phillips was one of the pioneer women cartoonists in the Golden Age of Comics, working primarily for Fiction House publishers. Fleeing Nazi Germany to America as a child, she went on to draw covers and such features as The Lost World, Senorita Rio, and Werewolf Hunters for Planet Comics, Rangers Comics, and Fight Comics. With her then-husband Eric Peters, she also drew covers and interior stories for a number of Abbott & Costello Comics. Phillips talks about her amazing life and career with Heidi MacDonald (The Beat).

Both of which we’re very, very excited about! In fact we’re super-excited about New York Comic-Con, since it will be here in about five minutes and so will just about everyone we know.

Venture Bros come to NYCC

11/14/08

200811141208
Jackson Publick and Doc Hammer, the creators of THE VENTURE BROS., will be Special Guests once again at the 2009 New York Comic-Con, and while we won’t reproduce the entire PR, we will include the bios:

About Jackson Publick:

Jackson Publick III was born in 1971. The only son of Jackson Publick, Jr., author of the popular Rusty Venture series of boys’ adventure novels, he forsake his literary birthright to pursue comic books and a degree in the liberal arts. He was successful at neither, and after a period of sky country hoboing and soul-searching, he decided to put his limited skill-set to use in the Creative Warfare department of the Marine Corps; Psi-Ops division. His most notable achievements during his short tenure were designs for something called “The Mindcopter,” and a squadron of giant, flying metal lions which, when reconfigured and joined together via electrical current, formed a giant, flying metal man. Neither project was ever put into production and, upon learning that he had plagiarized the latter, the Marine Corps discharged Publick summarily, but honorably. It was to be the most important day ever. Drawing on the powers and influence of his amazing Bilderberg Group superpals, he then made up The Venture Bros.

ABOUT DOC HAMMER:

Doc Hammer was born in 1626 in Hamar, Norway under the name Erik VonHamer. Being the son of a humble cobbler, not much was expected of the young man other than to cobble, and to not complain about all the cobbling. But Doc was destined for greater things. “Greater things” being not cobbling. At seventeen, with nothing more than really well made shoes and a dream, he made his way to Antwerp to study oil painting under the great Rubens. Within a year the two were at odds. Rubens spoke (infrequently) of Doc as “that creepy skinny kid,” and Doc spoke of Rubens’s work as “kinda unattractive if you really look at it.” By 1648, Doc had relocated to Leiden, where he found his master in Rembrandt. It was there, in his 23rd year, that Doc met “She Who Was To Deliver The Kiss Of Eternal Youth.” After a spicy courtship, “She Who Was To Deliver The Kiss Of Eternal Youth” and Doc were married. By 1650, Doc had grown weary of immortality and committed an unsuccessful suicide by burying his never-corpse in the basement of a Dutch cottage. In 1870, Doc again resurfaced. Using the name Vilhelm Hammershoi, Doc resumed his painting career with mild success. After thanking his bride for “the immortality thing” and nicely reminding her that he had “heard every one of her stories like a billion times,” “She Who Was To Deliver The Kiss Of Eternal Youth” and Doc split up in 1916. Again, Doc literally went underground ’til the 1920’s, when Doc (now using the name Armond Hammer) resurfaced and made a whole mess of money selling overpriced meds to the Russians. Sick of all the baking soda jokes, Doc faked his death yet again. Biding his time ’til the MC Hammer thing had blown over, Doc again resurfaced as “Doc Hammer.” Today, Doc still paints in oils and writes, voices, and does other menial tasks for The Venture Bros. (A show you can watch on cable TV, were you to have cable TV.)
