SD08: Chopper Zombie

07/20/08

The creator of ICE ROAD TRUCKERS is now making comics. Frankly we’d be more impressed with an ICE ROAD TRUCKERS comic along the lines of CMP’s epic PROJECT X series…bu you take what you can get, in this case CHOPPER ZOMBIE from Devil’s Due.

Thom Beers, best known for his television success with prime time mega hits “Ice Road Truckers,” “The Deadliest Catch” and “Monster Garage” has sped into the fast lane by announcing active development of his first feature based on his graphic novel “Chopper Zombie.” Created by Beers, the “Chopper Zombie” movie is anticipated to go into production early spring 2009, and will be produced by Beers and Original Productions’ President Philip Segal.

The graphic novel “Chopper Zombie” (www.chopperzombie.com) will be released at Comic-Con International next week (July 24-27, San Diego Convention Center, SDCC) by Devil’s Due Publishing and was penned by Beers and Todd Livingston (”The Black Forest”) with cover artist Scott Keating. According to the publisher, advance sales from major booksellers such as Barnes & Noble and Amazon.com have been brisk. Limited edition copies will be available at Comic-Con with “Chopper Zombie” landing in stores on July 30, 2008.

SD08: The Blvd - #2707

07/19/08

Here’s another group of art superstars you will want to check out, with Bernard Chang, Tommy Lee Edwards, Sean Chen, Trevor Goring and John Paul Leon — like other groups, their press release mentions other art booths and suggests a new rallying cry: “BRINGING COMICS BACK TO COMIC-CON”.

As San Diego Comic-Con International (July 23rd-27th, 2008) grows each year, your favorite comic book creators can be harder and harder to find. In an effort to reach out to their fans, several groups of top comic artists and writers have dug into their own pockets for premium booth space in prime locations this year, right in the heart of the main exhibit hall.

For the fourth year in a row, theBLVD studio (booth #2707, across from Dark Horse Comics) will set up their own shop to meet fans on the main show floor. Tommy Lee Edwards (1985, BULLET POINTS), along with Sean Chen (SALVATION RUN, IRON MAN), Trevor Goring (WATERLOO SUNSET, WHAT IF? FALLEN SON), John Paul Leon (WINTERMEN, EARTH X), and Bernard Chang (WONDER WOMAN, THE GAME), will be signing autographs and providing portfolio critiques for aspiring artists, as well as selling original comic book art pages, new art prints, commissioned sketches, and limited copies of their acclaimed sketchbooks (including volume 3.0, featuring artwork by legendary artist Walter Simonson).

Everyone is teaming up, it seems, and this is a superstar lineup.

Award-winning and acclaimed comic book creators Jill Thompson (SANDMAN, SCARY GODMOTHER), Brian Wood (DMZ, NORTHLANDERS), and Cliff Chiang (GREEN ARROW & BLACK CANARY, DOCTOR 13) will exhibit for the first time at San Diego Comic-Con International 2008 (July 23rd to 27th). With the explosive growth and popularity of the comic convention, the creators join a rising number of comics pros who have chosen to reach out to their fans by exhibiting with prime locations in the heart of the main show floor.

Located at BOOTH #1322 (next to First Second Books) and nestled between the busy publishing and retail pavilions, Thompson, Wood and Chiang’s booth provides exceptional convenience and the unique opportunity for attendees to shop at nearby retailers and booksellers and have those items signed by the creators. “We’ve had great experiences at the show in the past, but having our own booth allows us to stretch our legs and give our fans better access to us,” said Chiang, who is currently working with rock legend Neil Young on the upcoming GREENDALE graphic novel.

SD08: INDEPENDENTS screens

07/19/08

PR:

Please join featured artists Wendy Pini (Elfquest), Kevin Eastman (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles), Jim Woodring (Frank), Shannon Wheeler (Too Much Coffee Man), Keith Knight (Knight Life), and director Chris Brandt for a special screening of the comic book documentary Independents, Thursday, July 24, 2008 from 6:25pm to 8pm in room 26AB of the San Diego Convention Center during Comic Con.

The question most regularly asked of any creative professional is “Where do you get your ideas?” People are eager to participate in the process of artistic invention and imaginative expression, yet many seem to believe there is some magic involved. The documentary “Independents” reveals that all one needs is patience, persistence, a pencil, and a piece of paper. The documentary examines the creative drive, through interviews with dozens of artists who have paved their own roads to success as self-published graphic novelists. “Independents” focuses upon the motivation and passion of traditionally marginalized creators, and examines how artists’ lives are inescapably bound to their labors of love.

SD08: The Search for Carl

07/17/08

Adult Swim has warned us of an ATHF promotion to find a Carl look-alike–things could get ugly.

One “lucky” real person to star as Carl in first-ever live action episode Adult Swim today announced the nationwide search for a Carl look-alike to appear in the first-ever live action episode of Aqua Teen Hunger Force.

The search will begin Saturday, July 26, from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m., at the Omni Hotel in San Diego during this year’s Comic-Con convention, what some consider to be the epicenter of Carl-like men. Aqua Teen Hunger Force, one of Adult Swim’s most popular animated action-adventure, comedy-dramas, follows the strange everyday lives of three human-sized food products who live in New Jersey. Their next-door neighbor is Carl, a simple man who’s endearingly sweaty, hairy, lewd, fashion-challenged, horny, nasty and
oftentimes annoying. All men remotely fitting that description are encouraged to show up. It would also help to be bald, have a mustache and wear a dirty white tank top, sweat pants and flip-flops. For background, video of Carl’s awesomeness can be seen at AdultSwim.com.

Aqua Teen Hunger Force co-creator, Dave Wills, who is also the voice of Carl, will be on site at the San Diego search. Aqua Teen Hunger Force is created by Matt Maiellaro (12 oz. Mouse) and Dave Willis (Squidbillies).

San Diego’s economy…again

07/17/08

Sdlogo Copy
We’re interrupting our ongoing attempt to sort through our San Diego-related email to note something rather curious.

You see, The Beat and Future Mr. Beat are staying on Monday night in San Diego to chill out, detox and simply sit staring silently into space. Our accommodations are still in a state of flux, but this morning The Beat was checking on hotel prices and was pleased to see you can get all kinds of rooms for reasonable rates and not $400 a night.

This got us thinking. Since the Comic-Con is far down the list of San Diego’s most profitable events, we wondered whether hotel rates would again skyrocket the next weekend for those far more profitable events. The answer: No.

Back in January we noted that the annual ESRI convention is considered to have a larger economic impact on San Diego than Comic-Con:

This PR from the mayor’s office admits that Comic-Con is an important piece of return business for the city, but says the Environmental Systems Research Institute show is an even BIGGER part of the city’s economics, attracting approximately 15,000 specialists in geographic information system software. These 15,000 map-muddlers generated some $46.5 million in economic impact for San Diego in 2006. Comic-Con? A mere $32.1 million. Doing the math, a geographer computer nerd spends $3100 in San Diego. A stormtrooper, a scant $267 (based on an estimate of 120,000 attendees in 2006).

This idea was echoed in this story from the New York Times:

And it is decidedly low-rent. No. 33 on the official tip sheet lists the grocery chain Ralph’s Market as an alternative to dining out. The Bio International Convention in San Diego, a gathering of the biotechnology industry, with one-sixth as many attendees, produces about double Comic-Con’s $41.5 million in economic impact on the city.

So we decided to do a little comparison shopping.
